Photographer of infrastructural & operational landscapes ➡️ Filed under @operational.land (The Bureau of Operational Landscapes) | Professor at Aalto

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

In the Journal, a conversation between @steve.bisson and @donaldweber explores the field of photography, the role of education, and Weber’s experience with *The Bureau of Operational Landscapes*

Founded in 2024, *The Bureau of Operational Landscapes* is a non-disciplinary initiative that explores overlooked industrial and infrastructural spaces through photography, guided tours, and site-based encounters, inviting participants to read the land beyond its official narratives. Before turning to photography, Donald Weber trained as an architect and worked with Rem Koolhaas in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Much of Weber’s work seeks to make visible the technological, spatial, legal, and political systems that shape our contemporary condition—the infrastructures of power.

Donald Weber is an Associate Professor of Contemporary Photography and Head of the MA Photography programme at Aalto University.

DONALD WEBER (Aalto University 🇫🇮)

Associate Professor of Contemporary Photography & Head of Photography

For Professor Donald Weber, the first question isn’t,

“What can you make?”

It’s:
“Who are you?”
What matters to you?
How do you see the world?
And what questions are you trying to answer?

At Aalto University, students are encouraged to experiment without limits.
Push ideas as far as they can go.
Then refine.
Focus.
And discover what truly matters.
Because artistic voice isn’t found by playing it safe.
It’s found through exploration.

When reviewing portfolios, Professor Weber isn’t looking for more images.
He’s looking for clarity.
A portfolio should reveal your vision—
not just your technical ability.
Show where you’ve been.
Where you want to go.
And why Aalto is the place to help you get there.

When asked about AI, his perspective was refreshingly honest.

Don’t fear it.
Don’t worship it.
Question it.
Experiment with it.
Challenge it.
Understand it.

Artists shouldn’t follow technology—
they should shape how it’s used.

His advice to young artists:

Love life.
Stay curious.
Play.
Fail.
Experiment again.
Don’t hide your failures—
learn from them.
And always ask yourself:
What is art for?

His definition of creativity:
Seeing possibilities where no one else thought they existed.

Discover how curiosity, fearless experimentation, and critical thinking shape an artistic life.

“Some have explored it as a modern-day Promethean parable, while others absorb audiences in the terror of invisibly deathly radioactive forces let loose, or fascinate in the urban ruins of Chornobyl’s satellite town, Pripyat.”
