Artificial Nature • 2023 • cyanotypes on variety of fabrics

Artificial Nature explores the visual relationship between images of natural textures and unnatural fabrics, highlighting the visual interaction they have with each other. There are a list of juxtaposing statements to describe the piece as a whole; images of natural textures printed on man-made fabrics with natural fibers created with a chemical process affected by natural elements.

Everything is printed using the same method in order to force some sort of unity throughout the piece. However, these prints are manipulated by the natural elements interacting with the prints during the period of time they are exposed in the sun. Instead of following the process of cyanotypes to get a clear, perfect image, I let the elements choose what the final outcome will look like; placing the prints in varied types of weather and in different environmental conditions. For example, some were rained on, gathered dirt and leaves on the surface from the wind blowing, and they were all made visible with the use of the sun.

These panels of fabric are stitched together to make a long tapestry, with the raw edges of each piece evident. This draws back to the organic aesthetic of the work in keeping things as close to the original state as possible. Each row represents one image of a natural texture, presenting both the positive and the negative photographic outcome. Placing them beside each other creates a pattern which relates back to the medium of cyanotypes and in experimenting with the possibilities of the process. by @donebydidi
