Still blown away that in 2019 when I moved from my inpatient hospital practice, as a Lactation Consultant, to my private practice I quickly had patients!

I am SO tired of people suspecting that human milk isn’t as shelf stable as it is.

Your milk has innumerable ingredients that K. I. L. L. pathogens.

In fact, human milk that has been sitting out after being expressed has LESS bacteria than when it was first was expressed. Why? Because the workers in your milk have started eating, destroying and killing bacteria.

There’s more bacteria on your $@*#! phone than inside human milk … even in its less than ideal state.

Nearly 10 years I’ve been navigating my own mental health. As a women who prided herself on being medication free, all natural and even 3 natural births…pharmaceuticals were my nemesis.

But my health was no longer healthy and became more important than my ideals of avoiding pharmaceuticals.

We need more research and studies about women’s health through all of our hormone shifts in our long lives. Rather than new into peri-menopause, when I wrote this, I am deeply into peri and HRT and navigating finding the right mix of hormones to keep me healthy.

A wild ride is an understatement.

The reality is all women, regardless of having had children or not, will go through peri and post menopause and likely struggle.

Sit on your hands my mentor said so many years ago. She explained why and it was a huge aha for me and shaped my entire lactation practice. I confidently know this makes me stand out among other IBCLCs.

You will find me sitting next to the mom (or on the screen often held by a family member), and I am talking to her, describing what she needs to do. My words are my tool not my hands. Since 2010 I have perfected this. 2020 made tele-health even more necessary of course, but this way of assisting was not new to me.

A women’s independence is what gives her confidence. And that is learned by her own hands doing the work, not my own.

Of course I practice locally in my hometown, KC. I also practice internationally; it’s wild how many cities and countries I now have families in.

We get creative, a family member holding the screen at Birds Eye view for me, moving the angle, even sending me videos of what issue they are seeing so I can assess. That goes for pumping and flange fitting as well! Even an oral exam, while not perfectly ideal, I can also instruct a parent on what to do as I observe.

If you have a trusted IBCLC in your area, fabulous. If you don’t, are feeling disappointed in your care or need another opinion, I’m here! Distance will not limit us.

I’ve had many families who I’ve remotely worked with give a loved one a tele-consult with me bc they are so happy with my care and trust I can help no matter how far apart we may live.

I’m always here ready for new families and honored to be a part of a very special and vulnerable time for new parents.

Everyone knows for breastfeeding we want BIG open mouths, widest they can and to avoid narrow latches.

We want a baby BREASTfeeding NOT NIPPLEfeeding.

People have gotten confused with flange sizing where we (now and correctly) measure the diameter of the nipple. The issue is they think the nipple shield should be the same size.

Wrong.

The placenta plays an integral role in a mother’s ability to make milk and have a full supply. What happens if there are fragments or pieces of placenta left inside after delivery? Listen to Summer explain what the symptoms are and how to resolve the issue. Solving the problem of low milk supply does not have to be a mystery.

How placenta encapsulation can also negatively impact milk supply, antenatal colostrum expression and nursing through a subsequent pregnancy will never use or run out of colostrum.

You’d never associate giggles with postpartum and new parenthood but this book gives you those belly laughs you so desperately need!

Pediatrician Dr Howard Bennett and his wife, Jan (an art teacher) wrote this and it’s a must read. Filled with hilarious illustrations by Amy Albright that capture the ins and outs of breastfeeding, pumping and babies!

This mama and I have been connected for over 4 years and her 3rd is coming! She lives many states away from me and we’ve never hugged, tho our virtual hugs are BIG!

Being able to know how important ‘sitting on your own hands’ is can make the difference between a women’s independence and confidence and none at all.

If I do my job right, when I leave she can do things by herself after having demonstrated that for me many times as I’ve watched.

People incorrectly assume that you must be in-person to be helpful. Not all Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) have the same skills, training nor experience. Are there some limitations in distance? Of course. And I will always be quick to be transparent about any limitations. But 9/10 times, my training and experience and creativity, we can GET IT SOLVED!

I’m lucky I had the mentor(s) I had, and lucky to have incredible families return to me if they need help. This mama’s next experience will be with an at risk baby, will pose different challenges than she’s had before, she WILL succeed and I will be there for any part she needs me for.

It’s her 3rd baby and the new baby is 1 week old and I’m in her room helping. As she is telling me her stories with her older two, I look over and see her @spectrababyusa pump with her name on it!

She tells me all about the FABULOUS mother’s room at her work where other moms pumped and also had Spectra breastpumps. So she made sure to personalize hers!!!

So CUTE!
