We will never dismantle this patriarchal system-rooted in behaviorism and ableism—if so-called experts continue to function as cogs within it. Women, dyads, babies, caregivers—none of them require meaningful support if those with the greatest influence continue to shift the burden onto literal infants. We need pediatricians who are bold enough to say, “this is unacceptable-it is harmful to babies, harmful to parents, and instead of conditioning infants to suppress their needs at night, I insist that mothers receive actual, substantive support.” Practitioners who promote sleep training are obscuring the legitimate needs of both mothers and babies, further reinforcing a fundamentally broken system that absolves itself of providing real support. Promoting sleep training as anything other than a last-resort intervention, reserved for truly emergent circumstances, is medical negligence. Anyone unwilling to engage in meaningful discussion around infant wellbeing-because advocacy for infants feels uncomfortable or is perceived as vilifying-is not, in fact, prioritizing infant wellbeing.
