Donna Stack Cliver’s piece “Backbone” feels very apropos at the moment. Its delicate handmade construction and beautiful crystals capture the light; while also demonstrating the flexible structure required to withstand the weight of life.

“I created my first lace vertebra around 12 years ago. I was drawn to this vision of a spinal column that was not made of bone, but of delicate lace. Porous. Delicate. Fragile. The seed for that idea, however, was planted years earlier because for as long as I can remember, I’ve always had back pain. It began in high school when I took gymnastics and tumbled as a
cheerleader. Backhand spring after backhand spring compressing the disks in my back. It worsened when I found myself the head of a university sculpture department and felt the need to “prove myself” by lifting and repairing metal and wood shop equipment on my own. Finally, that pain culminated into a herniated disk the first year I moved to California. And through it all, life continued. You find a way to get up and work through the discomfort. You tend to your family. You maintain the household chores. You show up to work every day. You celebrate your friend’s accomplishments. You give comfort to another. Your edges frayed? You keep going. You’re mentally and physically fatigued? You keep doing. You keep persisting and all the while that low or sharp pain becomes your constant companion until you forget what it was like to not have some sort of ache and it becomes synonymous to living.

Backbone was developed through a feminine lens, investigating the nuances of courage and fortitude alongside enervation and malaise. Jackasses. My husband has surrounded himself with jackasses almost his entire adult life. And what a beautiful life he has led with these incredibly insane, loyal, hilarious group of charlatans turned virtuosos. To say I am proud of @seancliver would be the understatement of the century. Language is limited, and I have not found a string of words that adequately conveys the depth of love, pride, and respect that I have for my husband. So let me say this, Sean’s relationship with Big Brother magazine and the @jackass franchise shaped the person that I fell ass over kettle in love with. A few weekends ago, I had privilege to watch my nephew @will.sopko cross the stage as a Magna Cum Laude graduate of @utknoxville 🧡. I am so incredibly proud of the kind, compassionate, intelligent young man he has grown into. Being his Aunt D has been one of the greatest gifts of my life. He’ll return to Knoxville for one more year to complete his masters and I look forward to witnessing the success his drive and passion will bring. by @donnagram

For International Women’s Day, I had the privilege to surround myself with some badass women. All of us working toward honing our skills. Toward bettering ourselves. It brought me so much joy to be among this sisterhood yesterday. And the end of our class, @controversial_by_katie_ gifted us these incredible hats. @seancliver and I were at @alpenglowlounge yesterday drinking wine and singing cheesy 80’s love songs (okay, I was singing) when a delightfully unexpected thing occurred. A couple had been observing us and @minivanmamacita (who is a concert photographer) began to take photos of us. She was so excited to share with us these intimate moments that captured a couple who was present in each other’s company. She was especially taken with Sean’s gaze and wanted me to see just how in love he is with me. And, oh, does he ever love me. How lucky am I to have a man that looks at me like that!! As Breast Cancer Awareness month comes to a close, I want to remind you ladies the importance of a monthly breast exam. Also, if you are over 40 and have the available means to do so, please schedule a mammogram. Early detection is why my breast cancer diagnosis enabled me to become a breast cancer survivor. 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, so make a self breast exam your monthly habit. 🩷🩷🩷 by @donnagram

I would be sorely remiss if i let this month slip by without sending a friendly reminder that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives, so give your tatas a breast exam! Both my granny and I are breast cancer survivors and we are grateful for early detection. As Breast Cancer Awareness month comes to a close, don’t forget to give yourself your monthly self breast check and if you are over the age of 40, schedule your annual mammogram.
