My full Artists At Work profile video filmed and edited by @joe_aidonidis. I am grateful to @aaw_artistsatwork for providing me the opportunity to be a part of the 2025-2026 New Orleans cohort. I am grateful to the @ashe_cac, and specifically @asalinjeridevan for ensuring that I was 1 of 4 artists chosen to be of service thru AAW. I am grateful to have spent the past year in community and artistry with @a.j.haynes @greergoffmendy and @guardiansoftheflamemaroons. I am grateful for Scout and Nadine and Gabriela and all the folks at AAW for protecting our integrity as creatives and ensuring we have the access and resources to fulfill our time.

We have just over 3 months remaining in our cohort year. I cannot definitively say what is next. What I know is that I live my life as a poet, culture writer, teaching artist, and organizer, and this season with AAW has gifted me the space, time, and community to walk in my purpose.

And all I got is gratitude. taken in New Orleans, Louisiana by @donney_rose

I wrote “Black Boy Soul Music” in the summer of 2013 at an inflection point in my performance journey. We had lost Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, and Jordan Davis. We would soon lose Mike Brown, and countless other Black boys to violence that showed up in various forms. My intent was to write a piece that relied on sound imagery as the primary device, and to unpack what was unfolding before our very eyes.

I created these visuals 13 years later, with the understanding that conditions have not changed, but still hopeful that Black boys will find harmonious summers. This is now (also) dedicated to the memory of Cyrus Carmack Belton, to justice for Karmelo Anthony, and to every Black son/sun who deserves a full lifetime of shining their light.

May our boys live at peace…in peace…and with the kind of love that keeps them whole and humane. 🙏🏾 taken in Black America by @donney_rose

A little travel tip I’ve arrived at after several cross-country road trips that either began or ended in the Deep South. There are so many Black folks who live in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. In some of those states the Black population is close to 40%, and Black faces can be seen at damn near any off-highway rest stop, gas station, restaurant, etc.

Which is to say, that if you pull up somewhere in a rural Deep South town and there is NO Black face in sight, it is not illogical to think that the residents did not intentionally isolate themselves from Black people. And therein lies the potential for danger.

Not saying harm or hostility is definite. But saying that history and present day evidence of racial animus toward Black people should be taken into consideration. Anything can go down anywhere, but if we can travel and practice harm reduction, we should.

“Growing up, Ms. Pat’s perception of the “American Dream” was similar to most – the imagery of the big house, the nuclear family and the white picket fence.

But as a Black girl growing up in Atlanta, she eventually realized the dream she was socialized to adopt was not necessarily her own.

“I truly believe Black people’s American Dream is not the same as other people’s American Dream,” she said. “Then I had to realize, what was my American Dream? Am I chasing this materialistic stuff that society says I should get?”

We recently had the pleasure of being in conversation with the hilarious and super authentic @comediennemspat about her memoir “Ms. American Dream” that came out earlier this week.

Head over to Observations In Blackness on Substack (observeblack.substack.com) to read and listen to the conversation around her inspiring rise to success, and her true definition of what success really means!

I can’t speak for anyone else but for me, Stevie Wonder is the greatest musician of my lifetime. For him to put our 4 unreleased songs from Songs In The Key Of Life that had sat in the vault for 50 years AND each of them could have easily fit on the 1976 release of the album is proof of GOATness.

When I think about the simple joys of life, I’m appreciative of existing in the same timeline that Steveland Morris has made music. I am grateful to have seen his genius live in concert multiple times. There are so many icons that we are familiar with posthumously. Those whose time across this plane did not cross paths with ours.

But Stevie has been there my whole life and is still active. And though these “new” songs were recorded a half-century ago, their leaving his archives and landing into our ears shows how much he never stopped appreciating us appreciating him.

A cultural note on ageism, misogyny, and the burden of Black beauty. Re: the cultural dialogue around how Jasmine Guy looks in the reboot of A Different World. [swipe]

Sidenote: I’m more than sure that most of the critique Jasmine is getting online is coming from people who look like they died 50 years ago, but I digress. by @donney_rose

“Maybe it is the case that
Mississippi confuses all the
Black boys it disappears as
feed for ravenous waters
and cannot make the distinction
between the Tallahatchie that
entombed Emmett and the
Horn Island it claims
to have swallowed Nolan…”

Gotta couple dope things happening this fall that I am excited to share. Here’s one of them. My literary art will be featured in @ellemnop.art and Southern University’s Visual Art Department’s exhibition “Lightwork” on display from October 19-November 19. My piece is an excerpt from my 2022 spoken word documentary, “Blood On The Bluff,” a poetic re-telling of the 1972 student deaths of Leonard D. Brown and Denver Smith.

The opening reception is October 22. I look forward to sharing art space with all the featured artists! taken in Southern University Hayden Hall by @donney_rose
