This 3-plied #handspun sample is brought to you by a braid of hand-dyed Merino wool from @woolgatherings and my #blendingboard, plus a few silks dyed by me.
Together, we have a divine heathered and iridescent result, suitable for garment wear. So far, this is tied for first place as my favorite swatch for my @spinoffmagazine article.
While I could spend the rest of my days making samples, it’s time to move on to my next articles and @nysheepwool prep, so I’m only making a couple more. 🤣 by @doodler01

I went to my spinning guild’s fall retreat last weekend and managed to ply up a bobbin of very patient singles, spun six months ago while on a knitters’ cabin weekend in the mountains.

This 220 yards/3.5 oz of a chain-ply is the colorway Beachside Brunch by @sweetgeorgia. I’d call it a sport weight at 1010 YPP and 19 WPI. You’ll note the yarn’s unusual sheen, which is thanks to the Trifecta base of BFL/mohair/silk (75/15/10), which I paired with a mostly worsted spinning technique to match.

This fiber was A TREAT to spin! That BFL is untreated and is such a spectacular complement to the mohair and silk, both is fineness and luminance.

More samples. These yarns originated as rolags from my #blendingboard. I love that bit of brown in the upper right corner of Photo No. 1, which was the result of my fiber coming into contact with rust in my double-boiler during the dyeing process.

Embrace the mistakes.

The carded and dizzed fiber came off my coarse-clothed (48 TPI) blending board somewhere around 2016 or 2017. I’ve always found it both fascinating and inspiring to revisit my early days as a spinner.

Sometimes, less can be more. This finished yarn, shown in progress on my grid and again here as photos 2 and 3, turned out better than anticipated.

This yarn was carded from scraps of scraps, or the smallest bits of waste left over from other carding projects.

Even a decade after carding and dizzing this sample, I still remember what’s in it: brown Corriedale from fleece, green Corriedale top from @ashford_wheels_looms, gold-dyed mohair locks from @drycreeknaturals, firestar, and neon-dyed silk noil, all blended into oatmeal BFL.

This is an especially fitting yarn, as it’s spun from fiber older than I first realized. The original fiber came from my very first @spinoffmagazine article—about the #blendingboard—which I wrote back in 2016.

I just spun the yarn up as a sample for another Spin Off article that’s due to be published in the Spring 2027 issue.

Not a bad way to spend my day.

This yarn was spun from one of my oldest blending board blends and was made with the smallest remains of scraps (so, scraps of scraps?). It dates back to somewhere around 2019, and it’s been hauled around the world as part of my samples. The roving had juuuuuust started to felt, making today the perfect day to throw it on the wheel with other surprising article samples.

I’m still working on samples for @spinoffmagazine. I love this one, especially that pink thread fully integrated into the stitches down in the lower right-hand corner.

The fiber is Targhee, and the threads are leftover silk, carded into the fiber on my blending board.
