A little Rimu wood, a great idea, and two very special spindles!

This fun project began when a customer, Debbie (@doodler01 ) visited Majacraft in New Zealand. Majacraft spinning wheels are made from Rimu, a tree native to that country. Debbie asked Andy at Majacraft (@majacraftnz )if she could have a scrap of wood as a souvenir. His generosity and willingness to share this beautiful native wood planted the seed for what became a wonderful collaborative project.

Debbie had also been in touch with Jon of JP Spindleworks (@jonpiercer ),and while she was still in New Zealand the idea of sharing the Rimu among spindle makers began to take shape.

Jon is a big fan of collaboration and always happy to promote fellow makers. He did the legwork of cutting the wood into pieces and sending them to makers. Debbie wanted to share this special Rimu with spindle makers whose work had influenced her own career or inspired her along the way.

I was lucky enough to receive a couple of whorl blanks, and I immediately started thinking about how to give them my “Sleek Spincraft” look. Dyeing and stabilizing the Rimu were key for two reasons. Rimu is beautiful, but the grain is not overly flashy. I decided adding color would highlight any unique grain patterns and bring another element of beauty to the whorls. Stabilization was important because Rimu is a softer wood and can be prone to dings. As a longtime Majacraft wheel owner, I was already familiar with its character from a spinner’s perspective.

The result? Two one-of-a-kind spindles made from a very special wood with a great story. One spindle went to Debbie, and the other found its way to a magazine editor friend of hers (@threaded_dream_studio) .I believe an article will be coming out in Spin Off this winter to share more of the story. I’m looking forward to reading it myself!

This was such a fun project, and an unexpected bonus was meeting two wonderful new people along the way. I’m sure more Rimu spindles will be popping up from other makers, and I can’t wait to see them!

A big thank you to Debbie, Jon, and Andy at Majacraft. You brought a group of spindle makers together for a truly creative adventure. Cheers mate!

Last month I attended @fiberblitz fiber festival in Wisconsin. There were a few yarn spinning workshops taking place, and I took that as a good reason to get my wheel out of storage and start spinning again. I haven’t spun since I was in college so there was a lot I had to relearn (thanks YouTube!) I’m so glad I did, and I’ve been blending fibers, spinning my own yarns, and loving getting back into this craft. It’s so addictive blending different materials and colors and watching them go from a ball of fluff to a finished yarn. I’m so back! 😅🧶
