📢 A special community screening: The People’s Emergency Briefing

What’s happening with climate and nature, and what does it mean for everyday life in the UK?

Join us for a 50-minute film bringing together leading UK experts with the latest evidence and why it matters. It’s based on the National Emergency Briefing held in Westminster and features voices from across the UK.

Afterwards there’ll be an open discussion about what it means for Coventry and what we can do locally.

This year’s campaign begins in St Michael’s!

We’re out every Sunday from 6 September speaking to residents across the ward, and we’d love you to come with us.

Dave missed out by only 4 votes in May. Labour will be working hard to keep their two remaining seats, so we need to be out there talking to people every week between now and May.

No experience needed at all. We do half an hour of training before we go out, and a debrief before everyone heads home. You’ll never be sent out on your own. by @doorstepdave

Great day door knocking in Hillfields yesterday in the rain with @covgreenpartymatt, then popping to @watch.charity and listening to @hillzfm DJs and local artists before heading over to the @ccfc_official_ first home game of the season, which unfortunately we lost by one goal! Should have won that one lads! by @doorstepdave

Swanswell Park is in bad shape!

On Tuesday 6pm a few of us are meeting at Creams because we really care about this park and want to think about what we can do to make it better.

Swanswell started as a medieval fishpond in the 1200s and was given to the city as a public park in 1880, so it has belonged to local people for nearly 150 years.

It is the gateway into Hillfields from town and is one of the areas few large green spaces.

It desperately needs some TLC and some friends to help it access funding and keep it clean and safe for people to enjoy the outdoors.

Hope to see you there! Will keep everyone posted about how this campaign develops.

We had a brilliant chat with Rashid Bharat, CEO of Positive Youth Foundation in Hillfields, one of the only youth centres left in Coventry. PYF serves over 3000 8-25yr olds a year and supports other youth services across the city. Exciting plans were hatched, watch this space! by @doorstepdave

Kostek is worried about the beautiful old Indian Bean Tree opposite the Police Station in the city centre. A previous branch removal, which the Coventry Society objected to at the time, has cracked the branch it was attached to, according to Kostek. He’s worried the council might decide to cut that cracked branch off too.

Kostek thinks there’s a better way: build a support for the branch instead of removing it. And make that support a Lady Godiva statue, holding the branch up.

This tree has stood since the 1940s, replanted after war damage. It deserves a fix, not another amputation.

What do you reckon? Lady Godiva holding it up? A simpler prop? Fence the whole area off, the way it’s done for trees in Stoke Park?

Had a great day at the West Midlands Green Party annual regional conference yesterday, met up with some people I know and met some I didn’t.

Lots of practical ideas about how to build a popular ecosocialist party capable of winning elections and how to win over people by meeting them where they are.

Tom and I ran a workshop on ecosocialism that looked at what we’ve done in Coventry, using Coventry Green New Deal’s Shadow Climate Strategy - which shaped local policy - to build an ecosocialist local manifesto, which @covgreenpartymatt @greenpartyvictor and I are trying to apply to one of the poorest wards in the city, St Michael’s.

Ours was followed by an equal practical workshop on how to use social media effectively which had a similar message: meet people where they are by finding out what their key concerns and needs are, and then building accessible and engaging content around that which platforms the Green Party’s unique offering to voters.

Then after lunch @nataliebennettgreen gave an inspiring speech emphasising how we need to respond to cynicism and despite with hope, and with a consistent message that caring for nature and the planet will make life better for human animals too. by @doorstepdave

Went on my first Hillfields Streetwatch with @covgreenpartymatt, our favourite local activist Kostek and Rahil, chair of the Hillfields Residents Association and general good egg.

They need more volunteers! As you can see it’s mainly fly tipping incidents which are reported to the Fix My Street app. On this one we were joined by rhe local neighbourhood policing team. Lots of great interaction with residents. Get involved!

Me and Matt are also in the process of helping residents on Signals Drive at the other end of the ward to set their own Streetwatch up, so watch this space!

Fantastic @covgreenparty workshop last night where we discussed how we can better serve Coventry workers in trade unions as well as their connected communities.

We’re starting small - please drop me a message if you would like to get involved, you don’t have to be a trade unionist - but we have some great actions to take forward and shared ownership.

Watch this space for news, we are going to hopefully be organising a larger event in the near future. by @doorstepdave

We’re holding our first Green Party Trade Union Workshop to bring people together, share ideas and decide how we can build stronger links between the Green Party and the trade union movement in Coventry.

This isn’t a lecture or a committee meeting. It’s a chance to meet like-minded people, identify practical projects and leave with a plan for what we want to do together.
