Mental Health First Aid for children, families, and communities across Nigeria. ๐Ÿง ๐ŸŸข
๐Ÿ“˜ Mental Health First Aid Handbook
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Sometimes what looks like laziness is a child or teenager struggling with something they donโ€™t know how to express.

A sudden change in motivation, concentration, confidence, or behaviour is worth paying attention to.

Before we label them, letโ€™s pause and ask:

โ€œWhat changed?โ€

Understanding comes before judgement. And sometimes, that simple question can open the door to the support they need.

Mental Health First Aid isn't about being a therapist.
It's about knowing what to do in the moment between "something feels off" and "they finally get real help." That gap is where most of us freeze, because we think we need training we don't have.
You don't need a psychology degree to notice when someone's smile doesn't reach their eyes. You don't need the right words, just honest ones. "I've noticed you seem off lately, I'm here if you want to talk" does more than most people realize.
This week we're talking about the people who look fine. Because a lot of the time, looking fine and being fine aren't the same thing.
Who's someone you could check in on today?

Our speakers share their heartfelt feedback on the session and the impact of teaching children to protect their bodies and minds. Their reflections highlight the importance of early education, assertiveness, and equipping children with the confidence to make safe choices.
We are deeply honored by the recognition and appreciation from the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (Lagos SUBEB), as they acknowledge the work of Dora-Care Behavioral Foundation in advancing childrenโ€™s safety, awareness, and empowerment.
Moments like this remind us that collaboration, commitment, and shared values truly make a difference in shaping healthier, safer futures for our children.

Can you become mentally unwell in a healthy environment? ๐Ÿค”

Short answer: it can happen.

A healthy environment helps, but it doesn't make anyone immune. Biology, past experiences and loss also play a part. And becoming unwell doesn't mean the environment failed, or that the person did. ๐Ÿ’›

Did you know? ๐Ÿง

People in high-stress environments are more likely to struggle with anxiety and depression.

Not from weakness. From compounding external pressure: stress that stacks up and doesn't let up. One pressure on top of another, with no time to recover.

Struggling in a stressful environment is a response, not a flaw. ๐Ÿ’›

Swipe through โ†’ then tell us:

What's one pressure people around you rarely talk about? Share in the comments ๐Ÿ‘‡

Myth: Mental health is only an individual problem.

Fact: Environment shapes it as much as biology does. ๐Ÿง ๐ŸŒ

Our bodies and our surroundings both play a part. Home, work, community and safety matter alongside biology. So supporting someone means supporting the person AND the environment around them.

Swipe through โ†’ then tell us:

What's one thing in your environment that affects how you feel? Share in the comments ๐Ÿ‘‡

Before asking "What's wrong with them?"

ask "What's happening around them?" ๐Ÿ’›

Stress rarely comes from nowhere. Work, money, safety, home and school all shape how someone feels. When we look at the surroundings first, we respond with curiosity, not judgment.

Swipe through โ†’ then tell us:

What's one thing around someone you know that might be weighing on them? Share in the comments ๐Ÿ‘‡

Psychosocial support: what does it actually mean? ๐ŸŒฟ

"Psycho" points to the mind. "Social" points to people and surroundings. Psychosocial support looks at both together.

It's not only therapy. It's also being listened to, feeling safe, and having people to lean on.

It can look like:
๐Ÿ’› A check-in call from someone who cares
๐Ÿ’› A support group
๐Ÿ’› A neighbor who listens
๐Ÿ’› Help getting back to daily routines

You may already be giving it.

Who could you check in on this week? Tell us in the comments ๐Ÿ‘‡

Today is World Mental Health Day. This year's global theme is "Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change."
We believe real change starts with real stories, the ones often spoken quietly, if at all. So today, we're asking: what's one thing you wish people understood about your mental health journey?
Share it in the comments if you're comfortable. Someone reading this might need to hear it.

Think of the person in your family everyone calls "strong."
The one who never falls apart. The one everyone leans on without a second thought.
When did you last ask how they're really doing, not the polite version, the real one?
Tell us in the comments who came to mind. No names needed, just the memory.

Did you know? The person who checks on everyone else is often the last person anyone checks on.

Caregiving doesn't always look like a hospital bed or a diagnosis. Sometimes it looks like being the one who remembers everyone's appointments, picks up every call, and somehow never runs out of patience, until they quietly do.

A few signs someone might be further along in that than they're letting on: they've stopped mentioning how tired they are, they deflect "how are you" almost automatically, or they've quietly stopped doing the one thing that used to be just for them.

If someone came to mind, that's worth a real check-in today, not just "you good?"

Myth: people who love caregiving don't burn out.
Fact: burnout isn't about love. It's about one person carrying weight that was never meant for one person.
You can love someone deeply and still need a break from caring for them. Those two things are not in conflict.
Save this for the next time guilt creeps in.#CaregiverSupport #MentalHealthMatters #MythVsFact #DoraCare #caregiverburnout by @doracarefoundation
