Realising my 23-year-old dreams here with an interview with Dorian Dumont of The Teenagers. Back in 2007, the French indie trio blew up MySpace with scandalous, sardonic synth-pop that poked fun at American teen stereotypes. It was the height of nu-rave — bands like Klaxons, New Young Pony Club and Simian Mobile Disco were white-hot, and all the cool kids in London were playing Kitsuné Maison compilations and going to Erol Alkan’s Trash! parties. The Teenagers were at the centre of it all, a painfully hip “joke” band that suddenly found themselves booked everywhere from Glastonbury to Coachella. After quietly disbanding in 2012, The Teenagers are now back as a duo. Michael Szpiner has stepped away; Quentin Delafon (vocals) and Dumont (guitars, synths) are blessing our ears with new music that’s as cheeky and catchy as ever. Via TikTok, their old songs are also reaching new audiences as Gen Z fans of indie sleaze dig deeper into the genre.

I had a great time chatting with the very funny Dorian about the band’s heady halcyon years, surprising influences (Coldplay!), their unlikely return some 18 years after their first and only album, Reality Check, and how they’re navigating the resurgence of their music in a very different cultural climate. It’s probably the most honest conversation I’ve had with an artist about what it feels like when your popularity starts to dip, and how DMs from fans can truly restore your faith. Do You Remember The Teenagers? well adjust your #MySpace Top 8 because they are so back with their new track ‘Do You Remember’ ☆

‘Do You Remember’ is off of their upcoming EP - their first project in 18 years since their 2008 debut album ‘Reality Check’. The song hits a really satisfying sweet spot between the chill guitars & the punchy sampled drums. It’s hilariously self aware & tells the story of not only The Teenagers, but the history of how so many indie bands blew up on MySpace.

Band members Dorian Dumont & Quentin Delafon have been keeping in touch since 2022 & it’s very cool to see the day has finally arrived where they’re releasing new music. It couldn’t come at a better time with a whole new gen of listeners discovering their music on TikTok for the first time. ‘Homecoming’ & ‘Starlett Johansson’ have gone viral on the app with popstars like Tate McCrae lip synching to their audio like it’s 2008 again.

The Teenagers are here to deliver to a new audience hungry for more, & are working with @altgrandma & @ravenifuwill on new tracks coming soon - but for now feast your ears on ‘Do You Remember’ ((d[-_-]b)) taken in France by @doriandumont

Dorian Dumont - The Teenagers. Dorian is on the podcast as we look back on how the band started as a 'joke', signing a record deal before having a rehearsal and why it came to an end. Now live on Patreon. Link in bio #theteenagers #22grandpod by @doriandumont
