The Teenagers are back with ‘Someone Special’, the latest taste off their upcoming album, & it’s teleporting me straight to the beach in the middle of summer ’07 Produced by @atlgrandma & @ravenifuwill - ‘Someone Special’ is about that ex you were only supposed to have for the summer, who your friends unanimously hated </3 but the chemistry was chemistr-ing & left you with deep, meaningful, sexy little memories you still think about from time to time. My favourite line of this song is ‘Running on the beach in slow motion, like the wife that dies at the beginning of the movie’. The Teenagers are so good at writing simple, instantly memorable melodies & then infusing their signature brand of humour into the lyrics when you least expect it. The way the song is mixed is really interesting: as most of the body of the acoustic guitar is tucked into the mix, it serves mostly percussion duties while the synth pads & driving bass supply all the harmonic content. In addition to the pads, there’s a really nicely sculpted reverb on Dorian’s vocals that create the atmosphere, making you feel like being on the beach in summer without defaulting to obvious ocean waves & seagull SFX. It bottles summer without the cliches in the instrumental. Included in the carousel are celebrity couples who are no longer together. Whether it was real love, PR romance, or somewhere in between - they were all iconic & unforgettable. RIP Love </3 Check out ‘Someone Special’ OUT NOW !!! <3

“Microdosing and an existential crisis.” Dora Asks @theteenagers about coming back after a long hiatus, the farewell song that became the comeback single, “Reality Check” as a (bad) taste of 2008, MySpace then vs the internet now, lyrics that may or may not be imaginary, and what’s next: a summer breakup ballad on July 31 and live shows this autumn. Swipe through to get to know.

Realising my 23-year-old dreams here with an interview with Dorian Dumont of The Teenagers. Back in 2007, the French indie trio blew up MySpace with scandalous, sardonic synth-pop that poked fun at American teen stereotypes. It was the height of nu-rave — bands like Klaxons, New Young Pony Club and Simian Mobile Disco were white-hot, and all the cool kids in London were playing Kitsuné Maison compilations and going to Erol Alkan’s Trash! parties. The Teenagers were at the centre of it all, a painfully hip “joke” band that suddenly found themselves booked everywhere from Glastonbury to Coachella. After quietly disbanding in 2012, The Teenagers are now back as a duo. Michael Szpiner has stepped away; Quentin Delafon (vocals) and Dumont (guitars, synths) are blessing our ears with new music that’s as cheeky and catchy as ever. Via TikTok, their old songs are also reaching new audiences as Gen Z fans of indie sleaze dig deeper into the genre. I had a great time chatting with the very funny Dorian about the band’s heady halcyon years, surprising influences (Coldplay!), their unlikely return some 18 years after their first and only album, Reality Check, and how they’re navigating the resurgence of their music in a very different cultural climate. It’s probably the most honest conversation I’ve had with an artist about what it feels like when your popularity starts to dip, and how DMs from fans can truly restore your faith.
