Today, 9 October, marks the anniversary of the wreck of the London at Rapparee Cove.
I find myself noting the date each year, partly as a way of returning to a place where so many histories remain folded into the landscape.
The wreck and its aftermath became the starting point for a research project I made with the @think.material. What began as an investigation into a single event unfolded into a web of stories: Black prisoners of war, local folklore, poverty, salvage, memory, and fragments of voices carried across centuries.
Standing here today in driving rain, it is difficult not to imagine the conditions that forced the ship onto these rocks in October 1796.
I’ve been thinking about Rapparee again while preparing for my residency at @joya_air and @mater________ . I’m looking forward to discovering a very different landscape and set of histories in southern Spain and consider how materials and stories are transmitted over time.

Amazing #asafoflags at Dyrham House from the #karunthakarcollection.
I didn’t know these works and was fascinated by how textiles, craft and colonialism are layered in their making, through people and place.
Powerful to see them displayed in a house shaped by the wealth and the administration of British colonial trade, systems that depended on enslaved labour, and to understand how the Asafo people responded to being in the middle of a world shaped by the Atlantic slave trade and their sense of satire and resilience to it. #colonialism #psychohistory #materialculture taken in Dyrham Park - National Trust by @dougburton_

Ceramic, steel, iron oxide

A family of hand‑formed nomads exploring how shelter, memory and ritual are carried through landscape. These clustered objects form a kind of portable architecture; a vessel, a reliquary, a fragment of terrain.

Chatelaine sits between the domestic and the migratory, evoking the way objects accompany us across distances and shift in meaning as they travel.

Exploring this edgeland as a site of layered time and shifting realities — where landscape, memory, and global forces meet.

Entropy - from 2008 onwards, I’ve kept this sculpture with me from my studio at Bow Arts Trust to showing it at 60 Threadneedle Street, London (last slide) to outside my studio in North Devon now.
