* The dottori landed at Dora House yesterday: Doctors @antoine.rogers.52 and Ruth van Dyke, and Professor Suzanne Scafe. And then there was the added bonus of the Head of Culture & Community and the Visitors Services Coordinator from @twotempleplace with their members who enjoy a visitors exchange with @royal_sculptors . After the walk through, I asked the doctors to pose with their favourites. Ruth loved the juxtaposition of @mariannebroch ‘s Root with @kate_mccgwire ‘s Throb. Suzanne selected @dougburton_ ‘s Roadside Picnic, and how happy does Antoine look with Post-Truth Barbie from @sarah_villeneau_ceramics ? * Reality Check, Dora House, 108 Old Brompton Road, SW7 3RA, ends 21st September. Closed Sundays. Monday to Saturday 11 to 5.

* Fabulous to welcome trailblazer muse Roy @roy.inc Brown to Dora House yesterday for Reality Check. L’icône internationale adorns Brixton’s Electric Lane, and continues to grace many a fashion portfolio, gallery wall, stage and catwalk, so it was fascinating to witness the spell that @dougburton_ ‘s Madmaxian ‘Roadside Picnic’ cast on him. I suspected that he might have been pondering how it might work as an accessory – joking - but it did accentuate his ensemble, definitely lulling his legendary volumentude into fleeting reverence. We had to keep an eye on his hands as he air-caressed the dystopian chandelier with hushed tones. It’s always educative to see the exhibition through friends’ eyes. Roy – like me – couldn’t quite believe that the objects and chains hanging from Doug’s steel hubcap crown were stoneware ceramic. It’s miraculous to imagine chains being fired in a kiln without somehow fusing. Once you tune into Roadside Picnic, it really is very absorbing from a material point of view, likewise function. You can imagine lifeforms nesting in its cavities or nightlights glimmering from within. Doug’s description is as follows, “The sculpture takes as its starting point a picnic in some piece of wasteland… Nomads congregate under the shelter of the hub as a portent to those passing by.” Overall, the exhibition precipitated a lot of conversation and the debrief afterwards was an all-time holler. Thanks for popping in Roy. And thanks again, Doug.☺️ * Reality Check, Dora House, 108 Old Brompton Road, SW7 3RA, ends 21st September. Closed Sundays. Monday to Saturday 11 to 5.

Really happy to have Pyre selected to feature in this year’s Royal Society of Sculptors Summer Show, curated by David McAlmont. Themed ‘Reality Check’, there is a dangerous, melancholic, mysterious undertone to the exhibition, with some humour. The society held a fabulous PV! Great to catch up and meet other members including @christopher.summerfield @dougburton_ @beyer.ba @carowilliamsartist @rosburgin @juliebrixeywilliams @joiner.b @susanefrancis. Thank you @david.mcalmont for including my work. It’s interesting to see my work installed by others who approach it with fresh eyes. Pyre is a response to the catastrophic Amazon and Australian wildfires happening just as Covid struck. It’s made of small carefully bound bundles of treasured finds, charred as offerings, relics of trauma, remembrances. The intricate making process relates to care and repair in a time of environmental devastation. Enjoyed wandering across London with @damhusleslieglenn to see @nicolaturner.art work at @royalacademyarts and then on to the closing event of 50/50 (Who’s Counting) at @unit1galleryworkshop. a woman plants a eucalypt tree far away from home. colder here. more rain. more tweed coats. the years pass. now he can see the top of the hill and beyond. the sea, the fields, a little house nearby there is music that comes from there. it tells him - stand tall, and grow strong.

Last weekend I had the absolute pleasure of assisting Gareth Mason @mudfondler during his 2 day masterclass @the_clay_garden Twickenham. I managed to capture some very special moments including these first words and the very end of a wonderful weekend. The attendees proved that they had definitely heard what Gareth had expressed. The masterclass ‘Joining the Hemispheres’ was an exploration of unrestrained throwing and constructing with composite forms. All the attendees were fully immersed in the experience and produced freeing forms while also having fun. We were very lucky to have Gareth, he’s a busy man! His first solo show ‘Seeing Things’ has just closed @carpentersworkshopgallery London and is about to open in Paris! Hopefully Gareth will have time to come back to @the_clay_garden so if you feel it’s time for you to go big and get free, you can get on the waiting list at ask@theclaygarden(dot)com I will be sharing more over the next few days so watch this space. #garethmason #theclaygarden #twickenham #shirleynettewilliams

Above and Below Reclaimed and found steel, copper, rope, paper, plant fibres, wood, insects, twine, wire, grasses, bones, seaweed, pondweed, nest, scrim, aluminium, sisal, wool, feathers, rusted paper 2023 This sculpture consists of material collected over years from different places, including South West UK and Kenya, each with a story. The work is a response to the entanglements of matter, rhizomic systems and debris that make up the strata we walk on. I’m interested in how line is a way of describing the (complex) web of relationships from micro to macro. To me line denotes energy - an ongoing process… line is active. Rhizomic connections are metaphors for life, line as energy, everything in life has a line doing things, matter in a process of becoming.. and everything is connected. My re-appropriation of reclaimed, found and discarded materials relates to waste, our relationship with matter, nature, and ourselves. A gatherer/scavenger, I enjoy transforming scrap, giving abandoned objects new life. I created this piece during a residency earlier this year in a large disused shop space in Somerset - @create_no8.. it was featured in my Solo there, and then shown in @wanderland2023 #tremenheeregallery @tremenheeresculpturegardens with @royal_sculptors, with assisted curation by @kirsgillow. If you’re interested in learning more about my practice or would like to join my next online sculpture course (Jan-Feb ’24) see my latest blog for details (link in bio).
