Crucial Times Fest raised over $2,000 for immigrant and refugee aid, gathering bands willing and ready to condemn ICE on camera. Artists from It’s A Setup to Iabsorbyourstatic and Portland’s Lab Rat filled the room with energy, snd spoke to the importance of community. A highlight of the bill was Downcast from Goleta, CA, who formed in the 80’s and reunited in 2015 after about a 10 year hiatus. “We felt it was time to get back out there and express ourselves a little bit more politically,” lead vocalist Kevin told us. VOICE OF THE VOICELESS - SMORGASBORD RECORDS 1991 UNA VOZ PARA QUIENES NO PUEDEN HABLAR. En 1991, Smorgasbord Records publicó Voice Of The Voiceless, una recopilación de hardcore punk que reunió a diferentes bandas y proyectos vinculados a la escena straight edge, vegan y de defensa de los animales. El lanzamiento apareció originalmente como LP de 12 pulgadas y corresponde al Smorgasbord Records #6 que posteriormente, fue licenciado a Doghouse Records y publicó una edición en CD. Décadas después, Smorgasbord volvió a poner el material oficialmente disponible en formato digital. HARDCORE CON PROPÓSITO Voice Of The Voiceless no fue simplemente otra recopilación de hardcore de comienzos de los 90. Su concepto estaba directamente relacionado con los derechos de los animales, y documentación archivística de la época identifica el lanzamiento como un “Animal Rights Benefit Compilation LP”. Material promocional original también señala que la recopilación apoyaba causas relacionadas con los derechos animales. En ese sentido, el disco representa una etapa en la que dentro del hardcore estadounidense determinadas bandas comenzaron a conectar la ética del straight edge con el vegetarianismo, el veganismo, la liberación animal y otras formas de activismo. No se trataba solamente de qué música escuchar, si no que también importaba cómo vivir. El LP reunió nombres fundamentales y otros menos conocidos de aquella generación: Endpoint Majority Of One Encounter Worlds Collide Youth Of Today Transcend Split Lip Stepdown Juvenocracy Outspoken Discipline Shelter Downcast Naked Angels Rob R Rock S.F.T.H. La edición digital oficial actualmente disponible conserva el material y añade grabaciones que no necesariamente corresponden al orden ni al contenido exacto del LP original. Por eso, cuando se habla de la edición de 1991, es importante no confundirla con la versión digital posterior. Following the Spokane 3 verdict, which saw anti-ICE protestors convicted of federal conspiracy, the city’s hardcore music scene turned out to Crucial Times festival. Organized by 221 Press, the event brought together bands from as far away as California, and helped raise over $2,000 for Spokane-based groups providing aid for immigrants and refugees. DOWNCAST - Hardcore, DIY, política, humanidad. NO ERA SOLO RUIDO: En la escena hardcore californiana de los 90, Downcast representó una forma diferente de entender el punk: música intensa, pero también sensible, política y comprometida. La banda cuestionó las poses y las reglas de la escena, defendiendo una idea sencilla: SÉ TÚ MISMO, SÉ HUMANO El amor podía convivir con la rabia. La sensibilidad con la frustración. El hardcore podía hablar de inclusión, identidad, privilegio y violencia sin abandonar su fuerza. CUATRO AÑOS. CASI 200 SHOWS: Downcast estuvo activa aproximadamente cuatro años, durante los cuales publicó varios registros y tocó casi 200 conciertos. Su primer 7", Downcast, apareció en 1990 como Ebullition #1, convirtiéndose en el primer lanzamiento de Ebullition Records. El vínculo con el sello fue fundamental: Brent Stephens, guitarrista de Downcast, estuvo involucrado en los comienzos de Ebullition y diseñó su logotipo. Después de esos años, la banda desapareció. Pero su influencia continuó. EBULLITION RECORDS: se convirtió en uno de los sellos esenciales del hardcore político y DIY. Su filosofía ayudó a construir una escena donde la música no era solamente entretenimiento: también podía ser una herramienta para cuestionar la sociedad, crear comunidad y expresar ideas. DOWNCAST FUE PARTE DE ESA HISTORIA DESDE EL PRINCIPIO. 25 AÑOS DESPUÉS… Downcast regresó con Kevin Doss, Greg Doss, Brent Stephens y Sean Sellers. Pero no quisieron presentar el regreso simplemente como una reunión nostálgica. En 2020 publicaron: TELL ME I'M ALIVE Un álbum de 10 canciones, editado conjuntamente por Ebullition Records y Three One G Records. El disco recuperó canciones que habían quedado sin grabar durante la primera etapa y añadió material nuevo. ____________________________________ Continúa ---> EL MENSAJE SIGUE VIVO Tell Me I'm Alive demuestra que las preocupaciones que acompañaban al hardcore de los 90 todavía pueden tener significado.
