POSTS STORIES REELS

this summer I was able to work along @nilelivingston to create 6 murals printed in Vinyl inspired by the collective stories/ memories of community members, the pants and wildlife found in fairmount park, and history of the @highmarkmann ! Each Panel telling a piece of the story highlighting the importance of the programs, people, and music beyond just the performances. thanks again @muralarts , the community members who took their time out to tell us what’s important and the team at the man for working with us. by @downes_art

Welcome to Woodbury Mural is Complete ! 💛💙

thank you to @sjartistcollective for hosting the mural until it was installed !! @kaseemedwards , @kahyangni , @theindigo.archives , @rsaiah.ieese and Frankie Brown for helping get this mural in the sky !! The high school for being so accommodating and letting me drive this large lift through the practice fields to get this done.

“Echoes Beyond the Stage” is a collection of 12 large-scale banner artworks by artists @nilelivingston and @downes_art created through a deep community engagement and research process centered on the history, cultural impact, and neighborhood relationships surrounding the @highmarkmann. The artworks explore the emotional atmosphere created when music extends beyond the stage and becomes woven into daily life.

Created with @muralarts, the project was curated and managed by @streetsdeptwalls/ @conradbenner. Special thanks to Wynnefield and Parkside neighbors. by @downes_art

Libra’s Toll/ Solar Winds🪭🌌

I wanted to be as intentional as possible with this. Anyone who knows KNOWS I love a fan. Fans are used to guide energy and obviously air flow ahaha. I wanted to paint figures that were beyond gender and sharing the most tender cheek kiss. As love to me is not strictly of romance but truly a driving force.

“When life was running me ragged, Philly opened the doors and kept them open.”

Listen as our Pride Month Artist collaborator De’von Downes (@downes_art) discusses their relationship to the city as a community artist. As a Mural Arts (@muralarts) muralist and co-founder of Philly Queer Life Drawing (@phillyqueerlifedrawing), community art is intrinsic to their practice. by @downes_art

“My artwork is Afrofuturistic, almost celestial. It’s fun, it’s nature-themed, it’s folklore, it’s magic.”

De’von Downes (@downes_art) visited the museum to walk us through their portrait “Pheromones” and their Pride Friday Night giveaway fan “Solar Winds,” which are inspired by queer love, the Black experience, and activating emotion through the five senses. by @downes_art
