my love letter to Camden 💕 @njtransit

In 2018 during one of the hardest transitions I’ve faced I started practicing gratitude and in that I started a ongoing poem that I add to as often as my heart requires called “Love Feels Like”. This is about more than just my love for community, and identifying things places, people, and things that make me feel love(d) BUT it’s about a memory that you carry on and live through.

when I was in the 5th grade I asked my mother for a scrapbooking kit. I started asking my great grandmother about her family/ my family. I still have my scrapbook and my great grandmother’s family tree. this is a nod to the 10 year old De’von who wanted to take memories and turn them into a page of laughter and love. by @divinedownes

what better way to celebrate my first large scale outdoor mural than to finish on my mother’s birthday.!! besides this pretty face my mother passed down the biggest heart to me. I’m so glad I get to carry it around and show love in all the ways that she would and some of my own. i cried so much during this project because I’m so grateful and I could feel my mom. I’m so proud. I’m filled with so much joy. I wake up everyday and I’m so grateful that she got to see me become “this” before she passed. I mean truly my role model and I’m so glad I was able to be encouraged and nurtured by such a lovely woman. 💕
happy birthday vermomica 🌺

thank you again to @beingchanellerene for assisting me on such a tender project, @acartsfoundation & @chelseaedc for the opportunity, and the community for being so sweet to me. by @divinedownes

Libra’s Toll/ Solar Winds🪭🌌

I wanted to be as intentional as possible with this. Anyone who knows KNOWS I love a fan. Fans are used to guide energy and obviously air flow ahaha. I wanted to paint figures that were beyond gender and sharing the most tender cheek kiss. As love to me is not strictly of romance but truly a driving force.

“When life was running me ragged, Philly opened the doors and kept them open.”

Listen as our Pride Month Artist collaborator De’von Downes (@downes_art) discusses their relationship to the city as a community artist. As a Mural Arts (@muralarts) muralist and co-founder of Philly Queer Life Drawing (@phillyqueerlifedrawing), community art is intrinsic to their practice. by @divinedownes

“My artwork is Afrofuturistic, almost celestial. It’s fun, it’s nature-themed, it’s folklore, it’s magic.”

De’von Downes (@downes_art) visited the museum to walk us through their portrait “Pheromones” and their Pride Friday Night giveaway fan “Solar Winds,” which are inspired by queer love, the Black experience, and activating emotion through the five senses. by @divinedownes

Happy Pride Month! We are excited to partner with De’von Downes (@downes_art), a non-binary artist from South Jersey who creates impactful murals, jewelry, and artworks in watercolor. Their portraiture focuses on the Black experience, weaving in symbolism from folklore and nature.
