Notice of Reclamation @chidi.co @looty.art at @artotellondonhoxton 12 - 25 October
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Chidirim Nwaubani & LOOTY’s exhibition NOTICE OF RECLAMATION, presented by Doyle Wham, is now open at the art’otel London Hoxton until the 25th of October.

Founded by Nwaubani in 2021, the LOOTY collective uses innovative art and technology to reclaim stolen artworks, revive cultural heritage and transform narratives about cultural ownership. In 2023, LOOTY used archaeological LiDAR scanning technology to “steal back” the Rosetta Stone from the British Museum. In collaboration with Egyptologist Monica Hanna, they returned the stone to its place of origin, Rashid, using location-based AR technology.

Nwaubani’s latest project, Mbari Memorial, is at the centre of the exhibition. The installation works through collective participation: touch the Ogene sculptures (named after the Nigerian metal gong) and make contact with each other to activate the generation of new digital sculptures. Through this process, Nwaubani is reactivating the spirit of Mbari, a Nigerian Igbo practice of collective creation that was wiped out as a consequence of colonial suppression.

Until the late 1960s, in times of need, communities would come together to build Mbari houses: sacred and artistic spaces dedicated to the earth goddess Ala. The sound of the Ogene would summon people to create the Mbari. Today, the only physical traces of Mbari houses are ethnographic photographs and objects held in Western museums. However, the practice of Mbari is approached by Nwaubani not as a lost “artefact” to be recovered and preserved, but as a methodology of collective making to be continued.

Presented on bottle crates, associated with the visual culture of informal markets and economies, Nwaubani’s Ogene sculptures challenge the museum’s mandate of distance: touch is not prohibited but required, and meaning emerges not from contemplation but from participation.

Rooted in 30 years of ikebana (the Japanese art often translated as “giving life to flowers”), Banton takes inspiration from Baroque paintings and Dutch Golden Age still lives, reimagining these iconic genres through the language of contemporary photography.

Here's a question, if a tree falls in the woods does it make a sound?

This question perfectly articulates the complex, almost parasitic relationship between colonial erasure and colonial preservation. Pointing directly at the ultimate paradox of the archive.

The early 20th-century photographic archives that dictate the study of Mbari are fundamentally deconstructed and reclaimed. This work forcefully confronts a paradox: the very forces responsible for the erasure of Igbo cultural continuity are the same entities responsible for collecting and housing its remnants today. By removing the human figures from these colonial records, the pieces leave behind stark, poignant voids prompting the viewer to ask whether our understanding of this heritage would even exist today if it hadn’t been archived by the ones who disrupted it.

Yet, in place of what was stolen, the compositions introduce recurring, vibrant motifs inspired by traditional Uli patterns the sacred designs that once adorned the exteriors of Mbari houses. The Uli motifs' bold geometry breaks past the structural boundaries of the frames, actively bleeding onto and transforming the surrounding walls. By expanding outward of the historical frame, bridging the gap between past and the contemporary.

IN THE BOOTH | Introducing our new video series, spotlighting the artists, artworks, galleries and conversations that shaped our 2026 edition.

For our first feature, artist Chidirim Nwaubani (@chidi.co) discusses his practice of placing his Mbari heritage’s transient traditions in conversation with the digital realm. His work, shown by Doyle Wham (@doylewham), also speaks to concepts of community and the spirit of co-creation.

Find out more about the artist’s work, which won him the Tomorrows/Today Prize supported by Fiera Milano Exhibitions Africa, and also hear from Doyle Wham’s Sofia Carreira-Wham (@artlife_london) on how Nwaubani’s work was received.

We are very proud of our artist @morganotagburuagu for reaching the finals of the Sony @worldphotoorg awards!

Morgan’s series Beneath the Bridge captures the powerful spirit of amateur boxers training beneath an underpass in Lagos, Nigeria. He builds a compelling narrative through portraits, action shots and intimate details, while his masterful use of light and shadow captures the everyday strength, beauty and ambition of the boxers.

His work will be exhibited at the Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition at Somerset House from the 17th of April to the 4th of May 2026. The winners will be announced later this week 👀

Mbari Memorial wins the Tomorrows/Today Prize at the 13th annual Investec Cape Town Art Fair 2026.

Presented among 126 exhibitors from 34 global cities and over 490 artists, Mbari Memorial: What Cannot Be Returned Must Be Reconceived proposes a radical shift from preservation to participation.

Inspired by the Igbo tradition of Mbari, communal, ritual, and intentionally ephemeral. The installation invites audiences to activate interactive sculptures inspired by ogene. Through touch and collective connection, new digital forms are generated in real time. Each activation becomes a shared act.
