Great few days at the DC26 Conference in Prague — inspiring conversations, fresh ideas, and lots of interesting perspectives shared on electronic music and dance cultures. Really enjoyed connecting with so many passionate people and exchanging thoughts on what’s next for our research field. Thanks to everyone who made the event such a great experience – especially to Ondrej Daniel and his team, including @lcia_65, who organized this event ✨

Our 2026 Research Networking Day brought together nine students, scholars, and artist-researchers selected via open call to present research addressing CTM Festival’s theme Ā»dissonate < > resonate.Ā« Hosted by @dr.analoguebubblebath, @dead9vbattery and Sarah-Indriyati Hardjowirogo, the three separate modules feature presentations by @lefteris_krysalis, @notajpeg, @kikaeche, @incontextmusic, @mayan.dj.pt, @lamiamusicuk, @borisonik6000, @studio_morten_poulsen, and Gabriele Murano diving into the complex musical, social and political interrelationship between these ideas—sometimes clashing, sometimes finding new ways to relate.

Thank you, Barbara, for trusting me with your beautiful flyer collection. I’ve never seen such a well-maintained and organized collection before. šŸ˜

Every flyer feels like a time capsule — perfectly preserved edges, colors still alive, names that once changed lives.

Now they’re becoming part of our Techno Archive. But behind every lineup, every logo, every date… there’s a story.

Were you at these parties in the 90s?
Why these ones?
Did you love drum & bass that much?
Who did you go with?
What did 3am feel like?
Was it sweaty warehouse nights, or open-air mornings somewhere outside the city?

These flyers aren’t just paper. They’re proof of movement. Of risk. Of community. Of sound systems pushed to their limits.

Barbara, I want to know everything.
What pulled you in?
What kept you coming back?
What track still lives in your body when you hear it today?

The archive will preserve the ink.
But the stories — those are still yours.

Tell me more!

I hope to catch you for an interview. 🩷

It’s truly an honour to be a guest editor at Dancecult.
I’ve been reading Dancecult for ages, and being part of its editorial team for a few years, but the guest editorial role is really huge!! It means a lot to me. Thanks @grahamstjohn1 for your trust! šŸ’–

Huge thanks to all the contributors — I absolutely loved the work with each one of you. @_djstrawberry @devpriyachakravarty etc.
Grateful to the entire editorial team for the smooth process and such a great, supportive atmosphere. šŸ’› @mrassister @mosesiten

ā€œIntroduction to EDM and its discontents: The contested mesning of Electronic Dance Musicā€™ā€ tries to tackle discourses around terms such as ā€œEDMā€, ā€œtechnoā€ or ā€œdanceā€.. A theme that’s been really close to my heart for such a long time.. What do they mean to whom and why?!

I can’t tell you how happy I am with the outcome.
Now the holiday season can really begin. 🩷 And I can close this year with a warm heart! šŸ’œ

Jóri Anita — A beat elmélete

Alig várjuk Dr. Jóri Anita technókutató holnapi, rendhagyó eloĢ‹adását. Kutatása a tánczene, a nyelv és a városi kultúra metszéspontjait vizsgálja. A Leuphana Egyetem posztdoktori kutatója és a CTM Festival Discourse programjának társkurátora. Anita arra keresi a választ, miként válik a ritmus társadalmi nyelvvé — hogyan szervezoĢ‹dik közösséggé, várossá, soĢ‹t identitássá a klubkultúra.

A beat elmélete címuĢ‹ eloĢ‹adásában a berlini klubélet és a gentrifikáció összefüggéseit járja körül: hogyan alakítja a város gazdasági és kulturális átalakulása az éjszakai élet tereit, és miként tükrözik ezek a folyamatok a tágabb társadalmi dinamikákat, valamint párhuzamokat von a budapesti klubszcénával, megmutatva, hogy a zenei közösségek miként reagálnak a városi változásokra és a kreatív ipar nyomásaira.

Október 26-án, 16:00 órakor a BINÁLÉ záróestjén.

Anita Jóri — The Theory of the Beat

We are looking forward to Dr. Anita Jóri’s lecture tomorrow 4 pm. Her research explores the intersections of dance music, language, and urban culture. A postdoctoral researcher at Leuphana University of Lüneburg and co-curator of CTM Festival’s Discourse program, Jóri examines how rhythm becomes a social language — how the dance floor evolves into a form of community, a city, even an identity.

In her talk, The Theory of the Beat, she delves into the relationship between Berlin’s club culture and gentrification, tracing how economic and cultural transformations reshape nightlife spaces. Drawing parallels with Budapest, Jóri reflects on how music communities respond to urban change and the pressures of the creative October 26 at 16:00, as part of the BINÁLÉ closing event. by @dr.analoguebubblebath

As promised, here comes the ā€œEastern European Raver from the Early 2000sā€ post.
I mean, this pic says it all: I’m around 16 or 17 years old here, in the early years of the millennium. I’m sitting in my room in the countryside of Hungary, not too far from Budapest (for the Germans: I’m in the ā€œHungarian Brandenburgā€). I’m wearing my father’s 70s T-shirt over a long sleeve, and my trousers were tailored by someone in the neighborhood for maybe 1 EUR to make them as baggy as possible, allowing maximum space for dancing. I have some friendship bracelets on my arms, a matching necklace, and Puma sneakers.
I’d like you to pay attention to some details in the background: a relatively okay PC for the time (it gives off a little bit of hacker vibes from 80s movies), which was heavily used for SoulSeek to fileshare music with likeminded ravers from around the world. It was my getaway in our family house, a way to connect with international people (yes, writing in English without Google Translate or AI) and share ideas and thoughts on music with them. Yes, downloading music was a thing, and now all Western people could say, ā€œHey, that’s illegal.ā€ But what else would you have done? There were only a few record stores where you could buy a CD or record for the amount of money you would have earned in a month as a student worker at the university. Yes, perhaps most of us from the region chose the ā€œcheaperā€ and faster way. But in compensation, I spent all my money on events — raves, parties, and concerts. I showed up with my body, spirit, and mind, without a smartphone, and enjoyed my time without needing a hashtag look.
Slow internet connections (those who remember ā€œmodemsā€ know what I mean), home-burnt CDs, and research on internet forums for the best musicians were integral parts of my secondary school life. The door policy wasn’t like today, you could easily get into clubs at a young age. I think I went to a club for the first time when I was 15.

This post should have been written earlier, but social media isn’t really my ā€œthingā€œ. So, what’s happened recetly? In short: a lot! šŸ˜…
I began my job at @_dialoguingarts @leuphana in October, where our project has been evolving nicely. It’s so refreshing to be part of an international research group full of like-minded people finding ways to decolonize and ā€œdialogizeā€ perfoming arts education. Excited to meet my colleagues in person in July after only seeing them on screens (Pic 2 – our WP).
This post is very much self-focused (lots of ā€œIā€s here) – not very decolonial. So a little bit of self-reflection is needed here; perhaps that’s the reason why I don’t post often. Still, I’d like to share a few events with you, maybe some of them are intersting to read about.
(Pic 3 & 4) I kicked off the winter season by speaking about my Berlin Techno Archive project at the symposium ā€œArchiving and Re-Performing Electroacoustic Music 2024ā€ and lecturing on Berlin’s club/Techno culture in Prague. Thanks for the invitations, @miriam.akkermann & Ondřej!
(Pic 5 & 6) Was part of the exhibition ā€œUngovernable Ingredientsā€ with former @udkberlin colleagues @silent.green and played my favorite records at the closing. šŸ’ššŸ–¤
(Pic 7–10) Chaired DC25, our Dancecult Conference @tu_berlin, with 70+ speakers worldwide. It was far the kindest academic conference I’ve ever attended. Ravers never disappoint! šŸ˜Ž
(Pic 11) Then came 10 days of @ctmfestival-ing with fantastic talks, concerts and club nights, including my beloved Research Networking Day – the recordings are already online. šŸŽ„
(Pic 12) Taught @humboldt.uni at the Music Department and @udkberlin’s Studium Generale. At both universities the studends were just so attentive. I had again two super nice groups of students. We visited @archiv_der_jugendkulturen. šŸ“š(This is the former club Planet’s decoration. šŸ–¤)
(Pic 13) Discussed the ā€œDetroit-Berlin Axisā€ at the American Association of Geographers Annual Conference in Detroit (unfortunately attended only online). šŸ“· by my co-panelist @fei_de_li_ke
Grateful for the support from many of you! THANK YOU!
And more to come in the spring-summer season!
