Helping women 25+ train like athletes again

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I was a track athlete who had to give it all up for chiropractic school.

The gym became my outlet. Three years of showing up with no performance goal, no race on the calendar - just me learning what my body could actually do.

And now? I’m craving more. Strength. Endurance. Speed. All of it.

This is me re-entering my athlete era. Not the same girl who ran track.

Something better. ⚡️

If you’ve ever lost yourself and had to find your way back - this page is for you. Follow to join me on my journey.

Hybrid training is a puzzle nobody hands you the answer to 🧩

When you’re coming back to running but you also want to be genuinely strong (not just strong “for a runner”) everything starts competing for space. Legs are sore for your run. Runs leave nothing for your lifts. Rehab gets shoved to whenever.

So I’m experimenting. Right now my runs are easy enough to ride alongside my leg days, but I already know that won’t hold once speed work enters the chat. The fun part is watching my own body tell me what’s working.

No perfect formula here - just a former track athlete reverse-engineering a routine that fits an actual adult life. 🏃🏾‍♀️

What you eat matters. When you eat matters just as much.

Many women nail the food but ignore the timing. Before, during, and after training your body needs different things at different times - and getting it wrong means slower recovery, lower performance, and feeling terrible mid-session.

I learned this the hard way as a varsity athlete training on empty at times.

Fuel is part of the program.

🎯 Save this for your next training day. taken in Toronto, Ontario by @dr.averytrains

🍳 Protein isn’t the whole story.

If you want to train like an athlete, your nutrition needs to match that demand. Most women coming back to training are stuck in bodybuilding mode - high protein, low carb, cut calories. That works for slow muscle building. It doesn’t work for performance.

Athletes prioritize carbs for fuel, protein for recovery, and timing for both.

I wish I knew this better when I was competing at university. I dealt with fatigue, brain fog, and injuries that were partly from under-fuelling - didn’t help that I was a broke, stressed university student competing at a national level. After years of studying the body I understand just how critical fuel actually is.

Sharing what I’ve learned so you don’t have to figure it out the hard way.

You can’t train well or run fast on empty. Feed the athlete.

3 years since I last ran. 6 runs in. Zero flare-ups!!🥹

If you’re a former athlete trying to come back without getting sidelined again - this is the part nobody posts about.

The reason I’m not injured isn’t luck. It’s restraint:

→ Conversational pace only. My cardio is way ahead of my tendons and muscles right now. I caught myself speeding up on one run and put the pace right back down. Respect the gap.

→ Same duration, same intervals, same pace - every run for two weeks. No progressing until my body adapts to the load. (Bumping up duration slightly next week WOO!)

→ 10-15 min of hip, glute & ankle mobility + activation before every single run. Plus single-leg strength work through the week - because running is a single-leg sport. You’re never landing on two feet, only one.

My focus right now: glute med, especially on my right side. That longstanding weakness used to put me out for weeks-months every time I ramped up too quick. Weak glute med throws off your whole lower-limb mechanics and dumps extra stress on your knees, shins and Achilles.

⚡️6 runs, no limping, no lingering pain. For my body, that’s the real win.

Full pre-run mobility + activation routine coming soon. Follow along if you’re easing back into running too!🫶🏾

Spoiler: I barely crack backs 😅

Most of my sessions? Soft tissue, joint mobilizations, movement work. Could an adjustment help some of my clients? Absolutely. But if they’re terrified, I’m not doing it - because a nervous body is the opposite of what we want.

The goal is always to get results in a way that works best for the client in front of me. And movement is medicine - it’s my favourite tool. taken in Toronto, Ontario by @dr.averytrains

I initially joined the gym after stepping away from track, thinking it would just help me stay fit until I got back into track training.

But life changed, track didn’t happen, and I fell out of routine for a while. When I came back to the gym, it felt completely different training for strength instead of just to support running.

I spent a lot of workouts hiding in corners, YouTubing how to use machines and second-guessing everything I was doing. But over time, I gained confidence - not from how I looked, but from getting stronger and realizing how good this type of movement made me feel. taken in Toronto, Ontario by @dr.averytrains
