Growing up, I loved reading and writing. In HS I always tried to write on topics that represented me — a Filipina American, but had to default to general Asian topics because Filipina/x/o American resources weren’t easily accessible (I’m old and this was at the infancy of the Internet 😂).

I’m am thrilled that the SAGE Encyclopedia of Filipina/x/o American Studies exists.

…and never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would be a contributor! 💕

So now, when a young Filipina American student wants to write about topics that represent her, she has an entire encyclopedia to reference 🥹 by @dr.clairerb

I came across this photo from September 2012— I was about 8 months pregnant, standing in the SF Giants clubhouse after they won the National League West Champs. Within a year, I had stepped away from teaching high school and made two big commitments: starting grad school to become a sport psychologist and becoming a mom.

This photo reminds me that our paths are rarely straight. Life takes us through twists and unexpected stops—but every stop matters. Covering the Giants as a baseball writer was one of those stops that ultimately shaped my path as a sport psychologist.

Through it all, I stayed true to myself—as a woman, as a soon-to-be mom, and as a proud Pinay in spaces where I wasn’t always expected to be.

This photo must have popped up with the intention to remind me — trust your path. You are exactly where you’re meant to be.

My 554th Reel: Filipino American Psychologists

One of the takeaways from this weekend’s @aapa.dofa conference was that you sometimes you to have to plant some seeds in order to make a garden. 🌺🌳🌹🌲

I’m so happy that the vision that @ejrdavidphd and I had over 15 years ago - to create a space for Filipino American psychologists, clinicians, mental health advocates, and scholars to feel seen, heard, and validated - has come to fruition. Never in our wildest dreams did we think we’d see hundreds of Filipino Americans gathered to discuss, learn about, and embrace mental health. Never did we imagine that this space would be one for people to feel authentic with their emotions, heal from their traumas, connect with their ancestors, and provide the kapwa and bayanihan that we all need.

Thank you @doctordelprado for leading the first DoFA conference in 2016.

Thank you for the DoFA co-chairs and conference planners - @gregorydesiertopsyd, @dr.clairerb, @_ksalandanan for keeping the legacy and vision alive.

And thank you to everyone who attended, shared their hearts and souls with us, and who will continue to do the work to advocate for our communities.

P.S. This reel is our call to the community to change the narrative that Filipina/x/o American Titos and Titas can be GOOD for your mental health! No more toxicity. No more body shaming or judgments about our life choices. No more comparisons or passive-aggressiveness or harmful tsismis. Just love, joy, compassion, fashion, dancing, and laughter.

When you’re used to being the strong one, the healer, the psychologist, or the one everyone else relies on, your default setting is to isolate and execute. You think toughness means putting your head down and carrying the weight solo.

Cancer broke that habit. But the truth is, learning how to let go is a daily practice.

Fresh off my second surgery just two weeks ago, I am physically in the thick of healing right now. And I am still actively, painfully learning how to put down my armor. I am practicing how to say, “I need help,” and actually letting my circle step in to hold the weight while my body recovers.

Allowing my community to carry me through the fear, the surgeries, and the healing is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. I don’t have it all figured out, and I’m still clumsy at it.

Moving forward, this page is going to look a little different. We are going to keep talking about mental health, sport psychology, and tech. We’re also going to talk about what real resilience looks like in real-time—messy, unfinished, and deeply human.

To anyone fighting a quiet battle right now: you don’t have to carry it alone. Let’s learn how to let our teams in, together. by @dr.clairerb

Simply, F*ck cancer.

In March 2026, I got the diagnosis. Since then, I’ve had to undergo two procedures —with my most recent surgery just two weeks ago. Today, I am incredibly grateful, relieved, and exhausted, but can say that I am officially cancer-free. 💙

I am standing here on the other side of this because of moments of incredible medical care, mental grit, and one massive variable: I caught it early.

F*ck cancer, seriously. But more importantly, get your screenings.

Do not let busyness, fear, a broken system, or the feeling of being “indestructible” keep you from booking your appointments. You have to be your own biggest advocate. If you’ve been ignoring a symptom or putting off a check-up, consider this your aggressive, loving sign to take care of it today.

Screenings save lives. Mine is proof. by @dr.clairerb

I talk a lot about pressure here. How we carry it, how it shapes us, and how we navigate it. But this past March, I was handed a reality I never could have prepared for.

I was diagnosed with cancer.

Instantly, the mental skills | teach weren’t just concepts anymore. They became tools to get me through this cancer journey. by @dr.clairerb
