Recently attended @aapaonline conference in Vegas and had an absolute blast connecting with the most hilarious leaders! The best way to advocate for the Pilipino community is through joy and humor. Oh and I'm absolutely grateful for the award! Thank you to everyone who has helped me in my journey. Also, send your proposals for @aapa.dofa conference next year in Hawaii!

Last weekend’s AAPA Convention marked my last public appearance as a current AAPA leader. It’s been an incredible eleven years of joy, growth, heartache, tears, and pride serving as DoFA Mentorship Chair, DoFA Co-Chair, AAPA Vice-President, AAPA President, and AAPA Past President. I am especially grateful for the people who have become family along the way and supported me through my leadership journey, and so happy that I got to spend wonderful moments of connection with them this past weekend. A special thank you to Kevin, Greg, Claire, Michelle M, Jan, and Lou for being my ride or die DoFA peeps from the beginning, but especially during this past weekend (I thank God for our group texts) with the emotional rollercoaster I was feeling with this transition. Connection highlights from the weekend: - DoFA lunch!! Thanks for coming out with so little notice! - Watching Wizard of Oz at Sphere with Greg and getting an apple - Bacchanal buffet with DoFAmily - Getting a highly intuitive and accurate psychic reading by @dr.ofina - A heartfelt 1:1 conversation with Derald about Stan - Getting my signed copy of Kevin’s new spicy fiction - Being dorky with my fellow queer elders at The Atlantis Show - Winning at a slot machine while waiting for Kevin to get his drunk ass over to me and Greg post Sphere, followed by hours of amazing and heartfelt conversation 😭 - Hamburger Mary’s with my DoQL family! - Spending time with Stanford peeps Helen and Richa, my current Stanford supervisee, and introducing her to AAPA in the best way possible - Hiring and enjoying the talents of Filipinx drag performers Jeffrey Xerxes and Empress the Aries at our banquet, and discovering that their inner selves are just as beautiful as their outer selves - A healing conversation with an ading I am blessed knowing that the relationships that started in AAPA will continue long after my AAPA leadership journey ends. Maraming Salamat (many thanks) to everyone for the journey of a lifetime! And Happy Filipino American History Month to all! ❤️

This panel proposal aligns directly with the conference theme of Filipino Americans “making noise” to celebrate identity, culture, and historical impact. By centering Filipino American therapists who speak openly about mental health, the session turns often-hidden stories into powerful acts of visibility and cultural pride. The main panel brings together Drs. Juliana Bianes, Gregory Desierto, and Claire Reclosado-Baclay leaders in the Division on Filipinx Americans, for an open and reflective conversation about their paths into psychotherapy. Each panelist will share how their personal histories, cultural backgrounds, and professional training led them to become therapists, and how this work has shaped who they are today as Filipino Americans. They will also discuss their perspectives on Filipino mental health, including how culture, family, migration, and identity shape the way Filipinx people experience, express, or silence their feelings. In the spirit of “making noise,” the tone of the panel will be relaxed and conversational, yet grounded in clinical expertise and community experience. Panelists may describe challenges, pain, and difficult moments in their lives and careers—including what first brought them to therapy, as clients and as clinicians. By voicing topics that are often kept quiet in Filipino families, the panel reframes vulnerability and help-seeking as courageous, culturally rooted practices. Listeners will see real-life examples of how therapists are also human beings who struggle, grow, and heal—and how their stories become “monuments to change” that rewrite narratives about Filipino American mental health. The panel aims to model emotional openness, reduce shame, and invite attendees to consider how therapy and community care can support their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of their families, contributing to a broader historical record in which Filipino American emotional lives are fully seen, heard, and honored.
