Not long ago, I co-wrote a book for healthcare providers and providers-in-training on #healthpolicy , #raceinAmerica, and #healthequity. It’s the longest chapter in the book, for valid and vivid reasons. I pulled it off my shelf as part of my Indigenous Peoples’ Day reflections, to give ample space for the legion of thoughts I have:

1) On the historical psycho-social and corporeal warfare Christopher Columbus waged on First Nation peoples of Hispañola, how his evils decimated civilizations, and his tactics literally gave way to racialized hierarchy and chattel slavery throughout the Americas.

2) On the yet and still fortitude of Indigenous people to pursue sovereignty of self, spirit and land, and the multitude of rites that remind younger people to their elder connections. All while the world tries to forget its sins. But present-day health statistics of Native peoples won’t let the world forget.

3) On what all this means to my work, today.

4) Finally, I think of ways to teach these histories to my son and how to teach him Native Power. Through land acknowledgments as we pray and honor our Indigenous ancestors, and when walking riverside near our home in Washington, DC. When we visit the National Museum of the American Indian. When we visit the Capitol Rotunda and look upon the art that deceptively depicts Columbus as hero.

And I’m here for more suggestions. taken in Indigenous Peoples' Day by @dr.mia.keeys

Thank you, @glblctzn for the thoughtful invitation to speak on #womenshealth and #structuralinequities related to global poverty, at this week’s Global Citizen NOW Summit.

The science says that women are sadder, more worried, and more anxious than in previous decades. Women and girls around the globe lack consistent access to the basics, y’all! I’m talking water. food. shelter. Not to mention lack of access to innovative, quality, and affordable healthcare.

The answers are:
Invest in women,
Believe women by believing the data,
and Empower everyone who loves a woman, to use their gifts and resources, and align policies, toward our collective uplift as global citizens.

It doesn’t have to be grand, but it does have to be toward the strategic good. taken in New York, New York by @dr.mia.keeys

During the 2026 United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) a few weeks ago, I moderated two private sessions & featured on one panel, all on significant and timely, global public health opportunities and challenges. Deep appreciation to @goalshouse , @gatesfoundation , @novartis , and @sciencesummit for your thoughtful invitations to generate much needed conversations. Each was such a rich space to share with stakeholders who are truly driving and sustaining public health impact. I salute each of you.

Here are my UNGA highlights on Women’s Health—namely Maternal Health— on AI in Healthcare, and on Community Health.

Shoutout to my @yalesom Executive MBA classmates for putting together such a thoughtful panel on ā€œAI at the Inflection Point: From Policy to the Production Line.ā€

Here are three takeaways from my AI in Healthcare discussion points.

1ļøāƒ£ Healthcare AI is both an innovation—new ideas and applications—and technologies—medical devices, algorithms, software and hardware. All of which are rapidly becoming commonplace tools within our nation’s healthcare system. I said commonplace, not necessarily inevitable.

2ļøāƒ£ The bulk of AI in healthcare was born the way most notable health innovations and technologies have been—in the wake of death & disease that has disproportionately ravished historically minoritized communities. It follows that, intentionally equitable legislative practices, healthcare AI and related policy will merely mirror the system from which it is bred—like an apple from the tree.

3ļøāƒ£Legislative actors are creating policies that are disjointed from larger, more entrenched public health issues, and often kowtowing to the demands of non-legislative, 3rd party entities. Traditional legislators lag behind the speed at which industrialists are introducing new healthcare AI products to market.

I can talk all day about this and literally wrote a 250-page dissertation on it. I’ll emphasize this:

With the expansion of AI in healthcare, we are indeed at a precipice moment in American healthcare. As the industry of public health innovation grows in scale and prominence, particularly in the wake of the public health emergency, COVID-19, historically marginalized patients are often bereft of benefits associated with health policy and high-tech care. One does not have to agree with a moral imperative to align oneself with an equitable AI in healthcare agenda. From business and society leadership perspectives, equitable AI policy and activation matter, still! Equity accelerates innovation, & expands market & potential end-users.

I’m happy to expound on why equitable AI Healthcare Policy matters & what that means for the health of the 21st century. Tell me how I can help you learn more!

My tatas turned 40 this summer. But this is not a birthday post.

In addition to celebrating in deeply meaningful ways, I also took full advantage,

Of the preventive breast health screening benefit, which the Affordable Care Act affords me;

Of zero cost-sharing for my mammograms starting at age 40, which the United States Prevention Services Task Force guidelines + the Protecting Access to Lifesaving Screenings Act provide me.

What I know at my big age is that optimal health in 21st century America is a not only a function of individual behaviors, but more so of policy, how policy paces alongside innovations and technologies, and how equitably accessible are those innovations and technologies. And so it is for breast health.

Just this year, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network released new guidelines on AI-powered breast health risk assessments designed not only to detect presence of cancer, but to predict future potential onset. This is MAJOR, especially given the trends of women under age 40– many who are not considered at high risk, one too many of my loved ones— developing, and thousands succumbing to, breast cancer.

AI has been present in breast health almost as long as I’ve been alive. The nation’s healthcare and innovation systems are only beginning to tap into longer-term predictive diagnostic capabilities, which agencies are learning to regulate, and for which payment pathways are only now being developed.

We have quite a ways to go to ensure equitable reach and impact of AI-powered health solutions across gender, insurance status, race/ethnicity, and geography.

My life’s promise is not only to keep up my own health and wellbeing through individual behaviors, but also to promote the public’s health via staunch policy work, rigorous global health research, and through critical public health and marketplace engagement concerning innovations and technologies that impact the health and wellbeing of women, and the people who love them.

Yet it is mostly love— love for myself, for my people, for women around the world— that will forever move my work.

Last week, nothing was flowing.
Everything felt like a lumbered lift.

I felt uncharacteristically irritated, over-hot, touched out, under-appreciated, under-rested, over-vigilant, overstimulated, and just over it.
And no it was not hysteria or hormonal (maybe just a touch).

So I dialed into my closest Mama-friends. Well, first I got a mani/pedi, and THEN tapped into my Mama-friends. We spilled all the beans, and I didn’t feel need to explain myself, hide away anything I truly felt, nor clean anything up. We were in it, together, exchanging everything we were doing to achieve stasis, from the tactical to the tactile —
Momentarily curling up on cool floors, with self-hugs.
Taking naps.
Cultivating gardens.
Sipping [insert choice beverage] slowly.
Sending the kids to all the summer camps and spaces where they could be feral.
Tapping, thankfully, into grandparents and the beloved Village.
I take none of these gifts for granted.

For me, walking and maintaining a practice of grounding is the perennial Mamahood sanctuary. That is, getting outside, taking off my shoes, standing and striding atop grass, and letting the elements wash over me.
Especially in between rains, when the grass is dewy soft. That’s the best conduit for immediate absorbing of electrons that reduce stress and inflammation.
That’s not like woo-woo Mother-Nature talk— that’s science.

After no less than 15 minutes, I felt clearer, more self-connected, and contented that my pedicure was still intact. I just needed the moment to release, reset, and be reminded that I’m not in this alone.
Especially when I’m alone.

And yes, to my toddler, I’m still the preferred pillow at 2:30am; an unsuspecting WWF-wrestling opponent to be bested; Hell’s Kitchener; chauffeur and Formula-1 racer to all the COVID-era babies’ birthday parties; the stinging insect nest-on-the-porch destroyer; personal shopper— all the things I gladly signed up to do upon becoming somebody’s Mama.

Maintaining my grounding practice is the reverence and ritual that recalls I to I, for me to caretake of me. I have everything— and then some, hallelu— to consistently make that pivot.

June 2026 was just extraordinarily powerful in terms of deepening my commitment:

1ļøāƒ£ to the business of health equity,
2ļøāƒ£ to strategizing about women’s health, and
3ļøāƒ£ to ideating around health innovation.

As a part of my global network week requirement as a @yalesom executive MBA student, I spent most of the month in Kenya, East Africa, dedicating deep time studying the African investment landscape— opportunities and challenges— through the @strathmore.university Business School. Shoutout to the stellar professoriate and also to my classmates!

The ā€œSilicon Savannahā€, as Kenya is called, is setting the tone across the continent with respect to emerging and sustainable markets. I am most excited for the country’s work in women’s health and health innovations. While it was my first time to Kenya, it will not be my last. Make sure Kenya is on your list for 2026!

A brief take on my experience as a 2026 Aspen Ideas Health Fellow. Main takeaways:

1ļøāƒ£ Public health is at the center of every sector of American life, but not core to our decision-making. Imagine if it were, and make it so.

āœŒšŸ¾ā€Technology is revealing the gaps in our healthcare system.ā€ - the veritas of @ucheblackstockmd . She said what she said.

3ļøāƒ£ Collaboration is the cornerstone of innovation. Alas, collaboration— and thus, innovation— does not have to happen at the table, proverbial or otherwise. Outside is innovation’s sanctuary. And that’s where you’ll find me.
