✨ PhD GRADUATION PICS! 👩🏾‍🎓 💚🇧🇷💛

••• I arrived in the US from #Brazil at 6 years old. I was #undocumented and my parents wanted us to have the education they didn’t get.

I decided if I were to be successful in school, I needed to be passionate about what I study. So my research 🧐 focuses on #art practices as tools for healing and liberation for Black people. In undergrad I got the Martin Luther King Jr. scholarship from @brandeisuniversity and in graduate school I received much support from @blackstudiesut and @blantonmuseum.

This was the most challenging 😥 journey I’ve ever embarked on alone and I can finally fully exhale again now that I am on the other side of finishing and starting a #PostDoc at @yaleartgallery 🖼 👩🏽‍🏫.

I am tremendously blessed + highly motivated. I just finished my #doctorate at 29 and I know many people doubted my ability to finish this degree (the whole hot gurl, #artist vibe somehow often means I look unintelligent to judgmental people) 🧿 🧿🧿

Anyways, I finished cuz I’m 💯 a bad bitch + a boss bitch wrapped up into one and I pray I get the chance to fulfill all the other dreams I have for my life with the grace, focus, and determination it took to finish this one. I also pray for more rest, ease, and peace than I was able to have the last 7 years while working on this goal. Those who saw me in the trenches, know what it took to get here. ❤️‍🩹

Love and appreciate y’all who root for me! May I be an inspiration for all your dreams to be manifested as well. You can now call me Dr. Semente!😉✊🏾🏳️‍🌈

Also, @justinhcinema did his THANG in these pictures. THANK YOU 🙏🏾

Shout out to @possiblefuturesbooks for storing for me (for a while!) and for hosting this amazing Fred Hampton Birthday Bash block party event where I showcased this piece for the first time on August 30, 2023! 🎨🖼️

I also did some vending of #originalart that day and was so grateful for the love I saw and felt from the #NewHaven community during my one year @yaleartgallery! Thank you + still miss the #NewHavenArt + community vibes! 🙏🏾 🫶🏽

Swipe all the way for some relevant books📚! I heard folks aren’t reading enough while our books are being fed to AI so I need us to please #READ (especially books by Black/BIPOC/Queer/Women).

••• It has come to my attention that y’all don’t be reading books like my friends and I #read books 🧐🤨🤔😅📚…

Please read real books before they feed all the knowledge to AI 🤖 and destroy all the books!!! They can’t take what is already in your mind (yet)! (Bonus: Any Octavia Butler and 1984 by George Orwell).

As an #educator this lack of reading really concerns me so instead of judging you (on here) I’m going to share my #readinglist from the last couple of years/classics I always return to.

I have the honor and privilege to know some of the amazing authors featured so they are tagged with their 📕 books! Thank you for all your words!!

Go be a #bookbaddie today!!

••• Feeling grateful for the work I get to do @wellesleycollege so I’m reposting the #thisiswho from @thedavismuseum 🥰🥹🤍🤍🤍

My best career advice is find work that makes your heart ❤️ sing! 🎤 Work will always be work, so I’m not going to say “you won’t work a day in your life” cuz frankly that is a lie.

I work really hard and have been all my life to get here from where I came and since I have a fun time existing (politics of joy see next post) especially around art or books (and a general Afro-Brazilian Pisces playfulness) people don’t always realize how seriously I take the work I do. 🤨🤔🙇🏾‍♀️🖼️📚

I’ll be posting more about the 2026 Summer Internship program that I run as well as upcoming events as we get closer to reopening on 9/24!

The Davis is free and open to ALL and I look forward to seeing more online friends come visit me at work this year!
