••• Goddess POV (12/30/21, Austin, Texas), 2025-2026, acrylic and glitter on wood, 30 x 60 in. 🌼 🍃 🌵

🛍️ Available for purchase via DM or email 📧 artbysemente@gmail.com. Not yet available on website. Original sketch has been sold.

My work follows the principles of #ecofeminism. The way a society treats its children, women, and environment is in direct correlation to its ability to survive. 🌍 🌎

The earth, its people and living beings, and the divine are not separate entities. Orixás teach us to remember this with reverence and care.

Done using binoculars after a 🏃🏾‍♀️ in my southeast Austin, Texas neighborhood. I took time to slow down, enjoy the wildflowers, and connect with my own divinity. 🤲🏽

Y’all can’t build bunkers and 💣 the same planet you live in and think you will survive. This earth requires a diversity of people and beings to survive. 🌌 Outer space will not save you, unless of course, you were always the real alien 👽…

We are all dependent on each other’s survival and most indigenous people globally knew this to be true before the yt supremacist global attempted/ongoing takeover. Anti-colonial work is also the work of environmental feminism.

…Or maybe I just like painting pretty flowers 🌹 😆 🤩.

P.S. Please stop telling people with nails 💅 they can’t be artists. It’s sexist and anti-Black basura 🗑️ even if the person wearing them is not a Black woman. How you think they learned that swag??

I’ve been drawing, painting, carving, glueing, etc. for years with or without nails. There is no one definition of a true #artist and it’s definitely not an aesthetic that needs to be regimented. I specifically did not major in studio art in college because I didn’t want my art or my body or my creativity disciplined unnecessarily by arbitrary rules or an Art History curriculum that didn’t include people like me. Things have sometimes gotten better in the art world but i still hear the darnest things.

Yes, I make what I want and I am a #selftaughtartist and a Black Studies and Museum Education #scholar, etc. My success can only come through my truest authenticity 😉.

••• I love being an #artist 👩🏾‍🎨 🎨

I was born an artist. It’s the one identity no one could ever make me question. I started drawing as a baby. In church to keep me quiet I scribbled with pen and paper from my mom’s purse. 👛 Yes, most babies scribble but I remember thinking about creating in the same way I have my whole life.

It’s still hard to keep me quiet without art, or about art.

This piece started with a sketch in 2018. Here we are just two finishing touches from done in 2026 🙃

Because I wanted to, I painted her. 🖼️

••• Feeling grateful for the work I get to do @wellesleycollege so I’m reposting the #thisiswho from @thedavismuseum 🥰🥹🤍🤍🤍

My best career advice is find work that makes your heart ❤️ sing! 🎤 Work will always be work, so I’m not going to say “you won’t work a day in your life” cuz frankly that is a lie.

I work really hard and have been all my life to get here from where I came and since I have a fun time existing (politics of joy see next post) especially around art or books (and a general Afro-Brazilian Pisces playfulness) people don’t always realize how seriously I take the work I do. 🤨🤔🙇🏾‍♀️🖼️📚

I’ll be posting more about the 2026 Summer Internship program that I run as well as upcoming events as we get closer to reopening on 9/24!

The Davis is free and open to ALL and I look forward to seeing more online friends come visit me at work this year!

••• y’all stay wanting to know about the #artisticprocess + what 30 something year old women with no kids do… so here you go 🤣

But really, all my #art is created through #ritual. I dance and sing and pray for my paintings and welcome in the wisdom of my ancestors and orixás.

New work will be available soon 😉. For now check out artbysemente.com/shop for what is available to purchase! 🖼️🎨
