Welcome!! I want to be a source of support for anyone seeking a doctoral degree in psychology. This page will be the one stop shop I wish I had when I was applying. The PhD application process is its own marathon, and I would like to share how I made it to the finish line (at least in terms of applications 😅). Let’s uncover the hidden curriculum together as I prepare to embark on my PhD journey!!

As a grad student living across the country from my entire family, having the opportunity to go home and celebrate those I love is precious to me. Being able to surprise my beautiful Nonnie for her 94th birthday is a memory that I’ll keep in my heart forever. My pockets may hurt, but seeing her smile when I surprised her was the most priceless gift I could ever receive. I know it’s hard, but if you are able, try and get home and celebrate milestones with family when you can grad students! I truly feel fortified for my third year 🥰

(P.S. jury is still out on whether I’ll fully return to LA after this program 🫣) taken in Los Angeles, California by @dr.tnt2b

Always an honor to attend the Association of Black Psychologists Conference!!! I am always in awe of how much I am poured into by peers, elders and community members in this space. This was my 3rd conference and first time presenting in a symposium! To learn and fellowship alongside pioneers of Black psychology whose contributions have influenced the entirety of the field is such a profound blessing! Professional spaces like these are increasingly rare, and I am so grateful to everyone who made this possible! I went to so many amazing talks including learning, African centered approaches to postpartum mental healthcare, and also navigating anti-black racism in professional spaces with @pearisjeanphd ! I look forward to meaningfully incorporating Dr. Jean’s framework with clients and for myself as necessary. Had an amazing time at #SPSSI26 !!!! It was a pleasure to present some of my preliminary findings from my thesis project which explores the processes by which Doulas cultivate empowerment and social support for Black birthing folks. I was honored to present along side incredible Black psychologists, Dr. Sierra Carter @scarter2210, my advisor Dr. Jioni Lewis @jionilewis and Dr. Nathalie Dieujuste. I am so inspired by the presentations on Black Feminist praxis by @blackqueergrits @douglard jackiethelight @whitney__clarke @nessiethegreat_ !!! It is so important to me to do work that expands beyond the confines of academic journals and touches the communities I intend to serve, so thank you all for modeling the beautiful ways you have been able to achieve that. All while in your PhD programs also!!! Shout out to the beautiful @studio_be_ it’s a must visit! And thank you to @anansisdaughters for an incredible tour! New Orleans owes me nothing! 🎷⚜️💜💚💛 taken in New Orleans, Louisiana by @dr.tnt2b

As 2nd year a grad student my time is precious, so I thought I’d free up a couple hours in my week by getting a braided style for fall! When I moved from LA to Maryland for my PhD I didn’t consider how important the accessibility of beauty professionals was to me, but being in the DMV has been wonderful (for the most part 😅). For folks applying to PhD programs this cycle, have you considered if your next location will meet your unique self care needs? taken in Langley Park, Maryland by @dr.tnt2b

APA 2025 was such a gift! To present in a symposium with my advisor at the same conference where I met her two years ago was such a full circle moment. In 2023 I was a masters grad who prayed to one day work beside Dr. Lewis, and here I am as her student! I am so grateful for all the wonderful connections I’ve made at both ABPsi and APA. 🫶🏾

I cannot think of a more perfect way to end my first year of my PhD program. My heart, mind and spirit are so full. Every interaction with ABPsi is a beautiful reminder of whose and whom I am. Being in space with GIANTS in the field of psychology who have created and shaped theory and tools of psychological liberation for Black people is a gift that reminds me to keep going. A reminder that I stand on the shoulders of so many who will loudly cheer me on throughout my career. This first year was hard, but not harder than anything my ancestors have triumphed against time and time again. I will sustain myself with the joy from this week for a long time to come. Thank you @nationalabpsi and @dc_abpsi !!!! 🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾

As I reflect on the love I’ve received from my village this weekend I am overwhelmed with joy and excitement for this next chapter of my life at UMD. As I set out to become educated (not indoctrinated), I will be alchemizing this love into purpose driven work designed to uplift US. I am deeply blessed to still be uplifted by the hands that held me as a child. My friends and family are integral to my journey and I thank everyone who has touched my life thus far from the bottom of my heart. Because of you, I am 🤲🏾

I always would explain to family and friends that finding an advisor is almost like finding a life partner. You will be in a close relationship with this person for at LEAST 5-6 years and they will *hopefully* serve as a mentor to you for your entire career. A huge factor in gaining admission to a PhD program is having a solid fit with your potential advisor. You want to share research interests, goals and working styles. Before you can find that perfect match, these are some great places to start! Reading publications can spark your interests and direct you to the people who are at the forefront of innovation in your field. Attending conferences gives you face time with these people and a chance to make an impression before application season. Finally, many faculty will find out about their ability to take on students in the summer and announce on twitter or Blue Sky (alternative Twitter for academics who have moral issues with Twitter). I followed these exact steps to find my advisor- I even cited her in my thesis before I met her thanks to step 1! Let me know if you have questions or additional suggestions in the comments!

If you want to earn a PhD just to be called “Dr.” you are setting yourself up for a painful 5-6 year journey! It is so important to find your why before embarking on a grad school journey, and part of that is having an idea of what your end goal is. Beyond the letters behind your name, what do you want your legacy to be? Whose lives do you want to touch, and how? The chart in the second slide is in no way exhaustive but it’s a great place to start. I will do a separate post on Counseling Psychology, but if you are interested in Counseling psych you might consider a Masters in counseling (though that also depends on your goals) For a pretty comprehensive guide to the many options for graduate study in psychology google “Mitch’s Uncensored Advice for Applying to Graduate School in Clinical Psychology” it’s a great resource!
