Opportunities in life.

If you ever want to get something in life, the only you can get it is by putting your effort in it. You have to be able to put yourself out there. For example, if you want to do research/publications/posters presentations in medical school:
-Go in search of opportunities
-Do your own research; read journals, papers, publications
-Ask advice from seniors/postgraduates/professors
-Ask if you can shadow others while they work on research, offer to help out.
-Find a mentor.
-Try your best!

If you are willing to go and look for opportunities, they will come looking for you.

Grateful for everything so far, hopeful for all that is to come โ™ฅ๏ธ

A few changes I implemented when I was studying for PLAB 1:

๐Ÿšซ1) Do not disturb mode for all the social media apps
๐Ÿž๏ธ2) Forest study sessions- 2 hour blocks
๐Ÿ“ต3) Turn off notifications
โณ4) Dedicated time each day to spend time with family and reply to messages from friends between Forest sessions.
โฑ๏ธ5) Set a time limit on the phone for Social media. I used to set a 30mins quota for Instagram. (Need to start implementing this again)
๐Ÿ‘€6) Keep the phone away. (Out of sight, Out of mind!)

How do you prepare yourself to study?

Free resources that I've come across for PLAB 2!

1) NHS Website
The NHS website contains all the information required on each condition. This would be a good place to start your prep. This was recommended to me by @theindiandoctorinbritain
Thank you my friend ๐Ÿ’™

Website link: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/

2) YouTube Channels related to PLAB 2
- @dr_aman_arora (Amazing advice on every aspect of data gathering and interpersonal skills)
- PLAB Strategies
- PLAB 2 by Dr Asia
- CSA videos

The information found on these channels is vast and will help you get a better understanding of how a doctor - patient consultation should be like ideally. If you are a new to the PLAB 2 waiting game, it would be ideal to watch the videos on these channels to gain a better understanding on how to proceed further.

3) PLAB 2 Guide on The GMC website
- The PLAB blueprint
- The Foundation programme curriculum
- Good Medical Practice
- Examiners top tips on how to avoid common errors in the Part 2 exam.

This is just a list of resources that I've found. If you have used any other free resource please do comment below. Let's help each other out.

Grateful

Everything, in time.

Just a random 12AM post.

This time last year, I was running around trying to get all my signatures done upon the completion of my internship. I didn't even get my English exam done yet as I thought I would get to that after my internship. In that moment I was lost, I wanted to be back home, but we couldn't travel due to lockdown. I wanted to get the English exam done so I could book a PLAB 1 slot, but that wasn't happening any time soon. It was all so uncertain.

It was then, I decided it was the right time to start studying for PLAB 1. I got a 5 month PLABABLE subscription and I started off with infectious diseases, but without an end in sight I could not take it seriously. I didn't have a clue what would happen, when I would even get back home. When I would even get my IELTS done. Such uncertainty!

All that being said, here I am: a year later, waiting to take the PLAB 2. ๐Ÿงฟโœจ

So, my advice would be to have faith. It will be difficult. Your mind will be uncertain. It will think of all the possibilities, all the second and third options. The wait might seem like it's taking forever, (believe me I know how that feels), but the key is to hold on a little while longer. It will work out, only if we work towards it.

Be patient! ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ’™

Grateful for everything so far.
Hopeful for all that is to follow..

March Reflections.

You can't go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending...

Just a few thoughts on my mind right now, almost at the end of March:

1) Gratitude ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ
Take a moment of your day to be grateful for yourself/any particular person/anything. It doesn't matter what you are grateful for, as long as you can take a mental or physical note of it. It will help immensely.

2) Time Management โŒš
Prioritise your actions for the day. Keep a note of what you need to get done for the day. Set a time line for yourself(not a deadline). And if you don't manage to get them done, don't worry, just work towards them.

3) Working for the NHS ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ
I recently started working as a healthcare support worker in the vaccination clinic in my city and this has been such a wonderful and rewarding experience. Grateful to have gotten this opportunity. So much to learn and so much to give back to the community.

4) Volunteering ๐Ÿค
I have taken a break from volunteering in April to focus mostly on studying and getting through my course work and PLAB 2. I will be back there soon. โœจ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿฝ

5) Meditation ๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿพโ€โ™€๏ธ
5-10 minutes each day. Just to reflect on your day and be present in the moment.

6) Appreciation
Appreciate the people who go out of their to help us, to guide us, to always have our back. Show them that you appreciate them because they deserve it. Everyone deserves it. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ’™

Congratulations to everyone who has just passed PLAB 1! This is just the beginning, strap your seat belt on because you are in for a ride of a life time! ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿฅณ

I have cut down my usage time on Instagram because I needed to recollect my thoughts and prioritize what I was working on. I needed time to think and plan my days accordingly. March has flew past so quickly. Looking forward to the future. Bring on April.

Masters and Post-graduation in the UK.

๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿพโ€๐Ÿ’ปIs there a possibility for me to do a Masters degree in the UK while I prepare for PLAB?
The answer to that would be, Yes! You certainly can. It depends on how well you can manage your schedule to fit in both the course work and your PLAB preparation.

๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿฝโ€โš•๏ธCan I practice in the UK after I have done masters?
You would still need to go through the PLAB route inorder to get your GMC Registration.

๐Ÿคท๐Ÿฝโ€โ™€๏ธWhat degrees are available for me?
You can pick the degree according to your interest. You can find them all online through the University websites or a quick Google search.

๐Ÿ—‚๏ธHow will it benefit me?
-It adds to your portfolio when you are applying for Speciality training.
-You get to be involved in research as part of some degrees.
-Get first hand experience of life in the UK before you start working as a doctor in the UK.
-You can be a student again! โ˜บ๏ธ

๐Ÿ“†Duration?
From 12 weeks(online degrees) up to 2years. Depends on the university and whether you choose to do full time or part time.

๐Ÿ’ธWhat about the fees?
For an international student, fees range from ยฃ10,000 up to ยฃ30,000 per year. Depending on the length of the degree. For an online short course, it costs around ยฃ750-ยฃ1500 pounds.

I'm currently studying a short postgraduate course: Epidemiology. It's a 12 weeks course that dwells into the concepts of Epidemiology and disease measurement at population level. It's part time. There are plenty of courses online for which you can apply for. You just got to do your research.

If you've done a Masters degree in the UK while preparing for PLAB, please leave a comment describing your experience so that others can learn from you! And please do share any advice you might have for prospective students.. โ˜บ๏ธโœจ

Gratitude.

Ever since I started maintaining a gratitude journal, I have realised I have so much to be thankful for.

๐Ÿ’šI'm so grateful for this journey.
๐ŸงกI'm so grateful for the people I've met.
๐Ÿ’›I'm so grateful for the guidance I've gotten.
๐Ÿ’™I'm so grateful for all the love and support.
๐Ÿ’œI'm so grateful to each and everyone of you.

I'm so grateful for everything that has happened so far.

A little background story: After my PLAB 1, one fine evening, there was a moment where I thought, I will just deactivate this account, but a little while later, I got a notification, Dr Naseer @naseersjourney discovered my post and reposted it to his stories. I was over the moon. And ever since then things have completely turned around for me. That moment had such a positive impact on my life, I still remember that moment like it happened yesterday. I'll always be grateful to you. Thank you ๐Ÿ˜Š

I've made such great friends who have become a part of my life. I've met such dedicated individuals who are on their own journeys and who inspire others and inspire me to be who I am today. I've gotten so much support, love and positivity.

I am strong believer of the phrase: "Trust the timing of your life". I did. Do you?

Truly Grateful,
Varija (Vee) ๐Ÿ’œ

How I colour code my notes -Highlighter edition!

๐Ÿ’œ Signs and Symptoms
๐Ÿงก Risk factors
๐Ÿ’™ Investigations
๐Ÿ’š Treatment
๐Ÿ’– Differential diagnosis

I have always had this obsession of sticking to one set of colours so that everything is uniform. While I was writing notes for PLAB 1, this is the colour scheme I've developed and so I thought I should stick with it for PLAB 2 as well. ๐Ÿ˜…
