I’ve been touched by grief one too many times. And each successive hit has cut deeper than the previous. Our lives are shaped by random encounters, in the people we meet. The places we go. Some people leave an indelible mark on our lives. This one hit me so hard. I am reeling from the blow. My friend, my sister. My confidant. My safe space. I know that you are resting and singing with the angels now. God speed my sister and my friend. I love you t’ori t’orun ❤️❤️❤️. I can only hope that you knew how much. taken in Dallas, Texas by @dr__oni

So many firsts! First day of med school. First day as an attending. First day as a practice owner. Nobody sees the years in between these photos. Many sleepless nights. The grief and anxiety carried quietly through exams and the moments of doubt that nearly won. The city I moved to where nobody knew my name.

Every first day was proof that the previous chapter had done its job. I share this for the woman someone in the middle of her own story right now. Not at her first day yet, but not sure if she’ll make it there.
She will.
Your first day is still ahead of you. And it will come. The road doesn’t get easier, but it’ll come because you’re more stubborn than the obstacles on it. Keep going. Every single first day was worth it. taken in Dallas, Texas by @dr__oni

Long road but oh so worth it! If I did it, so can you. Who else took the scenic route to their dream? Do share. Your story might just inspire somebody else. #relatable #motivation #blessed #grateful taken in Dallas, Texas by @dr__oni

I don’t know who needs to hear this today, but God is still good. Even on the hard and heavy days. The songwriter says not because it’s easy but we give thanks anyway. No matter how hard or how dark it is right now, the sun will rise again. As a matter of fact, it literally get darkest before dawn. If you’re struggling today with whatever it is, just as I am, hold on. Save this and share with anyone you know who is struggling or going through a hard time. taken in Dallas, Texas by @dr__oni

Every time I’ve started over, whether in a new country, in medical school as a mom, or building a practice with no network, I expected it to feel like a clean slate but it never did.
I brought my fears with me. I started before I felt ready. I cried in the car more than once. And somehow, step by messy step, I built a life I’m proud of. If your restart looks nothing like the pretty version:
→ You’re not doing it wrong
→ Fear coming along doesn’t mean you should turn back
→ Slow progress is still progress
→ Your past is the foundation you’re building on
Which slide hit home for you? Tell me in the comments 👇🏾

Save this for a hard day.
Send it to someone in the middle of their restart.
Follow for more real talk on starting again.

I wanted to be a doctor from when I was 6 years old. But life happened and it seemed like that dream had been buried. Life took many twists and turns till the opportunity came around again. I went to med school as a 37 year old mum of 3 and started residency at 41, pregnant with another baby. All because the dream refused to die. Many thought I was crazy then. But life settled into a nice rhythm after graduation and kids off to college. When I started to feel a nudge to leave the traditional healthcare system and start my own practice, worse in a new city where nobody knew me, many thought I was even crazier. Why now? What about my age? What if no patients came? How would I pull this off? At 50 when many are thinking about FIRE and pulling away from working. But it was better for me ti sit with the discomfort of starting over than to later live with the pain of regret. A dear friend told me whether I went to med school or not I would be 40 anyway. Now I’m 50 and wonder what would have happened had I never gone. I look at people around me who have done hard things. And if it had been done, then it can be done. I may sound like a broken record at this point, but I’m here offering myself up as a picture of possibilities. If this is you thinking about a pivot of some kind, starting something new but worried about taking too long, just because your dreams are taking time doesn’t mean they are not on the way. What are you working on? Do share! Send this to anyone who needs some encouragement today. And stick around to see where this goes 💃💃. #motivation #explore #startingover #pivot #midlife taken in Dallas, Texas by @dr__oni

I wanted to be a doctor since I was six years old. That’s the youngest that I can remember. It’s hard to even know where the desire came from, but by the time I was 10 I used to say I wanted to be a gynecologist. Between me and you, I didn’t really know what a gynecologist did, but it sounded fancy and big. It was a dream all@so@consuming that I really couldn’t see myself doing anything else. That desire was strengthened when my grandma passed away from cervical cancer and I knew it was due to ignorance and poor care. So when it seemed like the dream would never become a reality, I felt a deep disappointment and it was like a part of me died. Glory to God that purpose never stopped calling me and that dream finally became a reality even so many years later. Have you given up on your dreams? What were your childhood dreams? I started my medical career at an age when a lot of my classmates’ parents were retiring. Loans, three (almost 4) kids, a new country, and a salary that showed up years later than everyone else’s.
I didn’t have time to make money mistakes, so I made rules. I’m not steadfast following them but these have given some headway for sure.
→ Simple beats smart. Simplicity over complexity. If I can’t explain it in one breath, I don’t do it. Fewer accounts, fewer apps, and automatic transfers.
→ Debt is an emergency, not a lifestyle. Medical school normalized it. I un-normalized it. Every raise and windfall hits debt first and this really served me handling my student loans.
→ Catch up, don’t keep up. I stopped comparing my house to people who had a 15-year head start and started comparing my numbers to last year’s.
Starting late in any field isn’t a financial death sentence. It just means you can’t afford complicated plans and things or it may not get done at all.
This is what works for me, not personal financial advice. Talk to an actual financial planner about your own situation.
Save this for the day you feel behind. And share it with a late starter who needs it. 💙

I saw this trend, and it just really spoke to me. When I reflect on my journey, I’m reminded of that little girl who had so many hopes and dreams, but also had this image in her mind‘s eye of where her life would be at a certain time. Was it conditioning that made us think that way? Was it just childish dreams and the blind innocence of youth? Looking back on my life, I don’t think I have done badly, although I could never have imagined the path that my life eventually took. Of course I and every prepubescent young girl back then wanted to marry Michael Jackson lol. What’s most important for me is I have revised my definition of success. I am content with what I have while also trusting God for more to unveil. But I have let go of societal expectations and also of putting myself in a box. If you could have a conversation with younger you, how do you think it would go? Are you where you dreamed you would be? Do share in the comments. And follow along for more of my journey in real time. taken in Dallas, Texas by @dr__oni

Amen 🙏🏽 What are your expectations for this month? I still have so many goals I had pencilled down for the year and I haven’t even peeked at. Hoping to get started on some of them. What about you. Let’s encourage each other👇 taken in Dallas, Texas by @dr__oni

And that is my prayer for you too. It’s easy to just keep moving day to day and we don’t often realize how much things have changed or how much progress we have made. If the year hasn’t gone the way you wanted, we still have a few months left in the year.

Think about all the good that could happen between this September and next September and keep walking! Save this for the days you need a reminder that there is still hope ahead. #faith #growth #motivation #septembertoremember taken in Dallas, Texas by @dr__oni

IMGs, this one is for you.
ERAS is officially open. Interview season is here. And I know exactly what’s running through your mind right now because I’ve been there.
The waiting. The refreshing. The wondering if this is finally your year. The doubt that creeps in when you compare your path to everyone else’s “traditional” timeline.
Here’s what I want you to hold onto: your path was never supposed to look like anyone else’s. Being an IMG isn’t the asterisk on your story; it’s proof of how much you’ve already fought for this.
You didn’t get this far by accident. Every application, every exam, every year you kept going when it would’ve been easier to stop all make you who you are; and that’s who’s about to walk into these interviews.
So take a deep breath. Trust the work you’ve already put in. And walk into this season knowing you belong in the room.
Rooting for every single one of you this cycle.

Tag an IMG who needs to see this today. Save it for the mornings the doubt creeps back in. taken in Dallas, Texas by @dr__oni
