I’m not sure why I randomly remembered that today. Graduating residency was another milestone. You had to put your big girl or big boy pants on and realize that you made the decisions now. The buck stops with you. There was no more running things by the attending. Because guess what? You are now the attending. Imposter syndrome is real at first, so you find yourself second guessing and double checking little decisions until you start slowly coming into your own. Thankfully, there’s always a great supply network of colleagues that you can run things by when you are unsure and little by little, the confidence builds every day. I still believe a great doctor is humble enough to know what they don’t know and when they need to ask for collaboration, but also confidently grounded in what they know without necessarily being arrogant or cocky. Medicine by itself is a lifelong learning field. Especially because science evolves, research is always ongoing and there are always new updates coming up. Once you sign up to be a doctor, you have signed up for a lifetime of learning. Anyway, just a random memory that cracked me up today. Has anyone else experienced this? Or even if you were new at your job in no matter what field, how did you feel on the first day? Do share in the comments.
