Crude Nation: Teaching Americans to Love Oil

For today’s Live From the Archives, we’re looking at a promo booklet for Sun Oil’s 1955 “Oil Serves America” exhibit at Philadelphia’s Franklin Institute!

Oil has great PR. It’s one of the linchpins of our current climate crisis. Americans and oil (all fossil fuels, really) are in a loving death spiral, and have been for decades. How did we get here?

American science museums have been useful sites for laundering public opinions about oil for decades. Oil companies make exhibits that depict their work as scientific development, and vital to American prosperity.

Russia launched the first man-made satellite, Sputnik 1, in 1957. Americans responded with shock, fear, and a new commitment to science education.

That public response to Sputnik 1 was based on a lie. It also prevented a massive leap forward in public climate knowledge. Sputnik was launched as part of the International Geophysical Year (IGY), the 16-month global project to study Earth, from its core to near space, and even the sun. 66 countries participated in IGY, which was spearheaded by the US and Russia.

For this week’s Live From the Archives livestream, we’ll be discussing IGY, the revolution in science that was silenced to fuel the Cold War. Join me and @djianhead tonight, October 7, streaming live on my YouTube channel YouTube.com/@dr_davemc. 9pm EST, 6pm PST!

“Education” is central to American empire. On today’s Live From the Archives, we’ll look at some of the stories told about the lands that America seized after the Spanish-American war. What were people supposed to learn about Hawaii, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Cuba? And why was the American military featured?

On the next Live From the Archives livestream, we’ll look at the intersection of science, race, and gender through the story of anthropologist Gene Weltfish and the Congress of American Women.

This is the first of what I hope will be several discussions about attacks on scientists that used research to expose the lie of racism. And, in the case of Dr. Weltfish, embraced activism to bring her work to interracial coalitions of women.

Join me and guest @djianhead on as we livestream on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 9pm EST, 6pm PST

Museums hold an odd place in American life. We want them around. We value them deeply. But, how often do we go?

Museums have odd relationships with the public. Do we want throngs of people or quiet places for reflection and learning? Educators are expendable, even though they’re the ones connecting with the audiences.

The Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia is closing. Our family held a membership for 11 years. I also briefly studied the history of the Academy’s programs. I wrote down some reflections in an essay that’s free to read on my Patreon. Link in the bio.

How we talk about science is a problem. We have to more specific, and honest, if we want for everyone to be on the same page.

(FWIW, my family does vaccines and we’re focused on addressing the climate crisis. The science establishment still has to be better)

Check me and @djianhead as we discuss some ed programs from the late 70s that talk about energy policy. As we continue to grapple with the climate crisis, we can learn from old stuff as we create that new!
