Crude Nation: Teaching Americans to Love Oil

For today’s Live From the Archives, we’re looking at a promo booklet for Sun Oil’s 1955 “Oil Serves America” exhibit at Philadelphia’s Franklin Institute!

Oil has great PR. It’s one of the linchpins of our current climate crisis. Americans and oil (all fossil fuels, really) are in a loving death spiral, and have been for decades. How did we get here?

American science museums have been useful sites for laundering public opinions about oil for decades. Oil companies make exhibits that depict their work as scientific development, and vital to American prosperity.

On the next Live From the Archives livestream, we’ll look at the intersection of science, race, and gender through the story of anthropologist Gene Weltfish and the Congress of American Women.

This is the first of what I hope will be several discussions about attacks on scientists that used research to expose the lie of racism. And, in the case of Dr. Weltfish, embraced activism to bring her work to interracial coalitions of women.

Join me and guest @djianhead on as we livestream on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 9pm EST, 6pm PST

This brochure describes a pilot program about energy use that was created by the Franklin Institute Science Museum in the late 70s.

It shows us a sobering truth: American science educators and organizations have tried to educate the public about the complexities of energy use—and the dangers—before.

This brochure also raises questions. When I worked at this same museum in the early 2000s, we weren’t doing this work. What happened to these programs? Why didn’t they continue? Were they not successful? Did funding change? Was there outside pressure to end these programs? Perhaps by answering these questions, we may learn lessons to help us in a far more urgent.

I discussed this brochure in detail with @djianhead on the Live From the Archives stream on my YouTube channel. Link in the bio!

Another DollaBin “One More Crate” 20th anniversary post! A couple samples / loops used for a few of the cuts on the EP. Maybe it is time for a vinyl release? All these records still have the 50 cent price tags on them! The whole EP is available on Bandcamp for free! #dollabin #records

As @dr_davemc and I continue to look back at our original DollaBin release from 20 years ago this month, here’s another behind the curtain tidbit. I remember finding this break and being like oh shit no one knows about this lol (of course all the real break heads knew). Later I gave a copy to my guy Collapsible Mammals when he IDd that crazy white building those dudes were standing in front of! (I also have a sealed copy for sale for $25 if anyone wants one). I love interview records and Ramsey Lewis is one of my all time favorites so I knew there’d be something to sample off there for the intro. I’ll keep the other samples on these opening tracks hidden for now - admittedly I can’t even remember what some of them were! Twenty years is a long time. But I’ll try and post a few other sample flips I used over the next week. Appreciate all the comments on these posts, maybe it is time for a commemorative vinyl release of One More Crate…??? #dollabin #records #breaks

So @dr_davemc reminded me yesterday that it has been 20 YEARS since we dropped our One More Crate EP under the DollaBin name! Feeling nostalgic for the music made and the records dug we’re going to throw together a few posts this month celebrating this release made in a Brooklyn basement many years ago. Appreciate everyone who bought the cd or downloaded the EP back in the day or streams it now! #dollabin #records #independentartist #independenthiphop

#PHOTOVAULT MC Chill, Africa Bambaataa, Mr Smooth @ NYC New Music Seminar 1989ish /
Upon his death, how should one of hip-hop's cultural creators, Africa Bambaataa be remembered?
