Ten years ago, I remember sitting in this very cathedral, relieved to have reached the ‘end’ of what had been a very long journey. I was equally excited to put my newly acquired knowledge to use and terrified to be let loose on real patients.

Fast forward almost ten years later, and I had the incredible privilege of being invited back by King’s College London as the alumni speaker, helping to usher the next generation through one of the most important days of their lives. Here’s a little snippet.

Standing there, looking out at hundreds of graduates, I realised something.

I can’t go back and tell my younger self the things I wish I’d known. But I can share them with the people sitting exactly where I once sat.

So, if you’re graduating today, this is my gift to you.

Five things I wish I’d known:

1. Sometimes the best answer is simply, “I don’t know, but I’ll find out.” Just make sure that you actually do.
2. There is no single correct path. Some of the most rewarding opportunities come from taking the road less travelled.
3. Understanding beats memorisation. Patients, colleagues and mentors don’t just want your answer. They want to understand how you got there.
4. Seek out the specialties, projects and opportunities that genuinely excite you as early as you can. The sooner you understand what energises you, the sooner you can focus your time and effort where it matters most.
5. Say yes to opportunities even before you feel completely ready. Growth rarely happens inside your comfort zone.

Congratulations to everyone graduating today. I said it on the day and I meant it: welcome to one of the best professions in the world. I hope it challenges you, fulfils you and continually reminds you why you chose it.

To everyone celebrating ten years since graduation alongside me, I hope today gives you the chance to reflect on just how far you’ve come. Please do share a nugget or two below for those about to start the next phase of their journey.

For the past ten years, I’ve been on a secret mission - to recreate the moment that changed my life, for as many people as possible.

My friend’s big brother came to our school and gave a talk that changed the trajectory of my life. He told me that, despite being from a single-parent household in pre-gentrified Brixton, I could genuinely become a doctor. That was the fuel I needed to finally apply myself.

Ten years later, I made it through medical school with an award-winning performance - something I once thought would’ve been impossible. Reflecting on that pivotal moment, I knew I wasn’t the only one who needed to hear those words.

So I got to work. Schools, universities community centres, online seminars - I did it all. I reached over 10,000 students by my last count. The goal was simple: to inspire in the same way I had been in that classroom. Unbeknownst to me, within one of those audiences was the Master of the Worshipful Company of Barber-Surgeons - a prestigious group with a history dating back over 700 years, consisting of some of the most notable figures in society. The very same group that had sponsored three of my awards all those years ago.

The trajectory changed once again…

I am truly humbled to receive the Freedom of the City of London. I’ve now been made part of the history of the greatest city in the world. My signature in the world’s best autograph book, between my co-awardees - the President of the Royal Society of Medicine and the doctor who performed the world’s first CT scan. A true honour to see my name in the same book as Florence Nightingale and modern-day icons like Ed Sheeran and Sir Ian McKellen.

Thank you to anyone who ever showed up to one of my talks. This one’s for you!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: whatever is written on that results day piece of paper, remember this:

It tells you how you performed in a set of exams.

It does not tell you what you are capable of becoming.

As for me, that’s one step closer to teaching the vocation I love.

A-level Results Day always gets me reflecting. It’s such a strange day because, at 18, those few letters can feel like they are going to define everything that comes afterwards.

They don’t.

I wrote a piece for LBC today about why Results Day is one chapter, not the whole story, and why not getting the grades you hoped for doesn’t mean giving up on the ambition.

Grades matter. Of course they do. But there is almost always more than one route to where you want to go, and sometimes the route you didn’t plan for teaches you the most.

And today, more than ever, I think we should be talking more about non-traditional paths. University (with all of the associated debt) is one option, but it really is only one of many. Apprenticeships, vocational training, employment, entrepreneurship, content creation and plenty of other routes can lead to brilliant careers, and many of them don’t depend on those supposedly “all-important” grades.

If today went exactly how you hoped, congratulations

And if it didn’t, give yourself some time, look at your options and keep moving forward. This moment is important, but it is not the final verdict on what you are capable of.

Really grateful to the incredible @vanessabaffoe and @lbc for giving me the opportunity to share this today.

Full article in my bio 👆🏾

For those of you a few years beyond Results Day, how much did your A-level results actually end up defining where you are now?

I signed up for my first ever race… the UK heatwave had other plans. Postponed because of the 34°C heat. Naturally, it was rescheduled for the week I was on call, halfway through a 75+ hour week… and, because the universe likes to challenge me, during another heatwave (just a mild 31°C this time).

I emailed the organisers to check whether it was still going ahead. No reply. I genuinely turned up planning to ask for a refund or a different date (apparently it’s quite expensive to run around a park these days). I arrived. Everyone was there. Heatwave or not. I saw blind runners. I saw parents (I hope) pushing prams. Nobody was making excuses.

I spend my working day telling patients to stop making excuses or to stop waiting for the perfect time to prioritise exercise. I tell them that exercise and physical fitness is one of the best medicines we have. I tell them to make friends with hard.

So what excuse did I have? Was it all talk, or was I actually about it?

So I ran.
Did I get overtaken by blind runners? Yes.
Did I get overtaken by people pushing prams? Also yes.
Runner’s high? Not exactly.
Sense of impending doom? Absolutely.
Questioning every decision that led to this? 100%.
But we made it.

Next stop: sub-50
Then… the marathon🏃🏾‍♂️

My F1 group on our first day as doctors, exactly 10 years ago.

Behind the smiles a mixture of excitement and absolute terror. In reality, no matter how many years you spend at medical school (seven, in my case), nothing ever makes you feel truly prepared for that first day.

None of us could have known what the next decade would bring, but that day marked the beginning of a journey filled with challenges, friendships and countless lessons from both patients and colleagues. Looking back now, I genuinely love seeing how far everyone has come and all the incredible things my old F1 cohort are doing. Who would have thought it?

To everyone starting work as a doctor today on Black Wednesday, congratulations and good luck. You will feel nervous, you will have questions, and there will be moments when you feel completely out of your depth. That is normal.

Ask for help, support one another, and remember that nobody expects you to know everything on day one. Take it one shift at a time, trust that you belong, and be proud of how hard you have worked to reach this moment.

Good luck. You’ve got this!

As a medic, I’m guilty of finding it incredibly difficult to be proud of myself. Most of our achievements feel like the expected next step along a predetermined path. This was different. Today, I actually feel very proud of myself.

I’m not a runner. I promise I’m really not. Six months ago, if you’d asked me to do anything beyond a Couch to 5K, I’d have looked you square in the eye and laughed.

I got coerced into running as part of something a little bigger (more on that later). I started with a few 5Ks, met @respectthepace_ and got inspired to stretch my legs a little further. I even signed up for my first ever race, a cheeky 10K, this past Wednesday, but this heatwave had other plans.

Today we laced up with no goal in mind. No route, no time, just sunshine, Rick Ross and a runner’s high (yep, it actually is a thing. I believe you now).

It felt good, so we just kept moving. We made it to 10, then 15, and just kept going. Fuelled by nothing more than the promise of a McDonald’s breakfast at the finish line, we somehow found ourselves at the half marathon mark.

Shout out to the young J who used to fake being ill to avoid school cross-country. Look at us now - casual half marathon runners 😂

If anyone’s trying to get some Kms in hit me up. Marathon 2027 🏃🏾‍♂️🏃🏾‍♂️

Big up to the squad that got me here

Happy 70th birthday to this queen that I have the privilege of calling my mum.

She came to the UK in her 20s, giving up her career as a teacher at a highly respected school in Ghana to start again as a cleaner, all to build a better life for her unborn children and to support the wider family back home. Through sheer grit and determination, she worked her way up and recently retired from an impressive career with British Telecom (BT) after 30 years of service.

While learning to navigate a new country and culture, she raised me and my two siblings. I might not have always appreciated the methods at the time (I became very familiar with a few too many disciplinary tools), but in hindsight, she executed the assignment (single-handedly on a south London council estate) to perfection. Not to toot our own horns but she hit the African academic dream too - one Oxford and Harvard graduate, another Oxford graduate with a MBE from Her Majesty the late Queen Elizabeth, and then little old me with a couple of additional accolades. That alone would have been impressive, but she also supported the wider family back home, both financially and with her wisdom.

Beyond the accolades, she gave us the mindset and tools to succeed in life. If I achieve even a fraction of the impact she has had on those around her, I will consider it a successful life.

We took this photo in Ghana last year, yes she is 69 here. I pray that I age this well!

Love you mum ❤️

We are planning a little surprise getaway for her once we can all get some time off, so if anyone has taken their parents on a good all inclusive or cruise etc, please do send some recs my way!

One of the things that puts a smile on my face is being able to pay forward the kind of experience that shaped my future. This year we were fortunate enough to host it in the Great Hall at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, the oldest medical building in the UK! What I love most about this day is that it moves away from the usual medicine focused talks, because a career in healthcare means so much more than becoming a doctor.

Anyone who knows me will know that I always have a million things on my to do list, but if enough of you tell me that you would have benefited from something like this when you were growing up, then I’ll work on rolling something similar to this out across London!
