Thanks to Safi Bugel (@safxb) for this wonderful piece on ‘Rooms Of Neighbours’ for the @guardian.

For art to exist outside of institutional and gallery contexts is essential for its survival and continued relevance. Initiating this project made me rethink - again and again - my own relationship with art and, by extension, what society and community means to me and to others. It’s kind of changed my life.

Immensely grateful to my dear neighbours and to all of the artists involved: @lizjohnsonartur @i_c0st4bi @rachealcrowther @raheelkhan____ @kemkemlij @thatboiakathatboi @_inanina_ @j0sianep0zi @jessireaves_ Liam Gillick, Ben Kinmont, Ghislaine Leung, Marietta Mavrokordatou & Rirkrit Tiravanija. by @drabl

Announcing Rooms of Neighbours: a winding and unconventional group exhibition that I’ve been working on for the past two years. The exhibition takes place across 12 homes on the street where I live: Clifton Crescent, Queens Road Peckham. Each household was paired with an artist who worked with residents to install a work in their home, garden, or communal space.

Rooms of Neighbours features: Liz Johnson Artur, Isabella Costabile, Racheal Crowther, Liam Gillick, Ben Kinmont, Raheel Khan, Ghislaine Leung, Olukemi Lijadu, Jasper Marsalis, Marietta Mavrokordatou, Nina Porter, Josiane M.H. Pozi, Jessi Reaves, and Rirkrit Tiravanija.

Pictured: Ghislaine Leung, Care, 2024. Installed in the home of Toni & Tom, Clifton Crescent.

The wall is equivalent to all the days in a year. The 2016 child care hours the artist would need to cover working full time are shown as a banana rectangle. The 1140 free childcare hours supported by the UK government are shown inset as a cobalt square.

Edition of 3 + 2 AP. Thanks to Cabinet Gallery.

Announcing Artist Membership Project: an initiative providing free entry to London’s institutional exhibitions for artists, art workers and low income individuals.

A recent University of Glasgow report, commissioned by DACS, found the median income for visual artists in the UK to be £12,500 per annum. There is a clear disconnect between the financial means of artists and institutional ticket prices. Exhibitions priced at £20+ have become untenable for many and, at this moment, there are no major institutions in London offering concessionary rates for artists. Artist Membership Project hopes to put pressure on institutions to offer free entry or concessionary rates for artists by initially implementing a DIY solution.

Artist Membership Project has stashed membership cards for nine London institutions in lock boxes secured to fencing or bike racks nearby each venue. The location of the boxes and the combination codes are accessible via a WhatsApp group with instructions for using and returning the cards. To receive the link for the Whatsapp group please email: artistmembershipproject@gmail.com

The project requires a trust in the community, Artist Membership Project believes that it can be sustained and maintained collectively.

The institutions are: Tate Britain & Modern, The Barbican, V&A, National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, The Courtauld, Whitechapel Gallery & The Royal Academy.

A huge thank you to the supporters of Artist Membership Project: @asquire.ltd, @adamtrampstamp, @brunette_coleman, @ginnyonfrederick, @herald_st, @hot_wheels_ath_ldn, @jackbellami, @jayizzard, @nicwermers, @roseeaston223, @simonmparris, @selvimayz by @drabl

Documentation of Raheel Khan’s (@raheelkhan____) performance at French Ordinary Court, kindly supported by @nicolettafioruccifoundation.

This is the first performance in this series to be made without permission. Permits are not required by the City of London for non-amplified music. With performance programmes at institutions so poorly funded and inaccessible for most, we absolutely should be using civic space to host us.

Two of Rirkrit Tiravanija’s ping pong tables, adorned with his slogans, sit in the park at the far end of Clifton Crescent as his contribution to Rooms of Neighbours.

Their specific shade of orange is considered the color of illumination and the highest state of spiritual perfection in Thai Buddhism.

UNDER THE PAVING STONES THE BEACH is a famous slogan from the May 68 student protests in Paris. The phrase proposes that freedom and nature are hidden right beneath rigid urbanity.

Tiravanija’s ping pong tables are now a permanent fixture on Clifton Crescent although they’re not static: graffiti added since their installation will eventually render the slogans unreadable.

A huge thanks to Vera & Madeleine @pilarcorriasgallery for the help realising this.

Next in the series is a performance by Raheel Khan (@raheelkhan____), kindly supported by @nicolettafioruccifoundation.

Khan will be responding to the cavernous acoustics of French Ordinary Court, presenting a new iteration of a piece written for three tubas, the brass instrument with the lowest tonal range.

The street takes its unusual name from its 18th century use as an ordinary: a historical term for a place of eating serving simple meals for a fixed price. Ordinaries were common in London in the 1700s. The one that stood on this site was established by French Huguenots to cater to their fellow immigrants.

Re-post to correct an error: Announcing the 2026 iteration of Artist Grant: a biannual programme providing unrestricted financial support to artists worldwide. Link in bio to apply.

For 2026, £12,000 will be distributed. Six £2,000 grants will be awarded to six individuals, providing a financial boost to further their artistic practices. A panel of 11 judges will decide the successful applicants by popular vote.

Artist Grant is designed to have as few barriers to entry as possible: open to anyone who considers themselves as having a fine art practice. This includes but is not limited to: painters, sculptors, video artists, performance artists, installation artists, sound artists and photographers. Applicants need no formal training or education to apply. Factors of age, locality, gender and ethnicity will be considered to ensure equal opportunities.

Artist Grant 2026 has been made possible with kind support from: @davidzwirner @galeriederouillon @hauserwirth @lafayetteanticipations @sadiecoleshq @thaddaeusropac

Such a privilege working with Ladji Diaby (@ladji777diaby) to curate his exceptional exhibition ‘Who’s Gonna Save the World’ at Lafayette Anticipations (@lafayetteanticipations).

Grateful to @rebeccalamarchevadel for the invitation and trust, the incredible team at Lafayette for their unwavering support and @clement_delepine for his commitment and zeal in his new role as director of Lafayette Anticipations.

“Diaby uses these objects - many bearing the hallmarks of historical styles and trends now out of fashion - as vitrines for discarded (and now re-found) items from the lives of others. He considers each work a collaboration between himself and an object’s unknown former owner. While these artifacts carry no inherent material value, within an art space they are perceived differently. Through this act of exhibition, the artist interrogates the systems through which cultural value is determined in the West.” by @drabl
