🎙️ Two Drake University students showed off their storytelling talent with NPR’s Next Generation Radio program last week!

Joyanna Huang (second from right) told the story of Becky Massman, a former corporate accountant in Newton, Iowa, who left her 9-to-5 to open a shared-use commercial kitchen — filling a gap for small food businesses across the region.

Lily Fleming (second from left) shared the powerful journey of Mae Dehghanian, who grew up facing restrictions as a woman in Iran and found a new sense of freedom after moving to the U.S. to pursue her doctorate at ISU.

Thank you to Iowa Public Radio for sponsoring this program and giving student journalists mentorship and resources to tell even more stories that matter. 🙏

Help us celebrate our 2026 Drake SJMC Grads.

Major: Advertising

Hometown: Celina, Texas

Favorite Drake memory: Every International Night that is held in the fall from International Student Association. My favorite one when was 2023 at the Knapp Center and seeing everyone showcase their culture up on the big stage was a beautiful sight, and made me realize I want to be up on stage with a mic.

One tip for Drake freshmen: Explore all your options and try something new!

Plans after graduation: I’m planning to move back home to Texas while I continue building my experience in content creation and social media. I’ll also be traveling and exploring opportunities in media, entertainment, travel, and event management while looking for a role that combines my interests in creativity and storytelling. by @drakejmc
