35 metres of oak. 260 square metres of silk sail. A 24-metre mast reaching into the wind. Draken Harald Hårfagre was built in Norway to understand what Viking ships could really do, and out on open water—she shows it.

No set, no glass case. Only the world’s largest Viking ship sailing in modern times, doing what she was built for.

Draken Harald Hårfagre isn’t kept behind glass. She’s 35 metres of oak, hemp and silk, built in Norway to test what Viking seafaring could really do. Since then she has crossed the North Atlantic, sailed to the Great Lakes and, this year, been featured in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.

The film opened a door, but the story goes much further back, and it isn’t finished. ⚓

Old Norse sailors have told many stories about storms like these. On board Draken, the lore can feel very close.

The Vikings didn’t cross oceans because the sea was kind. They crossed because their ships were built to answer it.

Real ship. Real crew. Real weather. 🌊

260 square metres of silk. That’s the sail that carries Draken Harald Hårfagre, the world’s largest Viking ship sailing in modern times, and the hero ship from Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Movie.

Construction began in 2010 in Haugesund, on Norway’s west coast. Plank by plank and nail by nail, experienced boatbuilders, historians, craftsmen and artists shaped her from materials rooted in northern shipbuilding: oak, tar, hemp, iron and silk. Each one adds to her strength and her character.

The result: 35 metres long, 8 metres wide, with a 24-metre mast carrying that silk sail.

Real ship. Real craft. Built to sail.

Did you know that Draken not only runs on a professional crew and sailing deckhands, but also by dedicated volunteers who help support the life of the ship? And no prior experience is required (though, it is a plus).

The crew trains as we go, and volunteering is an excellent way to learn more about the vessel, the work behind it, and the wider community that keeps the project moving forward.

When volunteer opportunities open up, we always announce them on our socials, so make sure to follow along!

Watch the crew prepare for their arrival into Oslo this past July, and feel the buzzing excitement on board.

We sailed in to celebrate Draken’s own moment on the big screen, featured in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.

Real ship. Real crew. Real arrival. 🇳🇴

Thank you to @pederjacobsson for capturing this exciting moment.

Cold, rain, huge waves and a wooden ship rising and falling beneath their feet.

Tom Holland, Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson and Christopher Nolan share what it was really like filming The Odyssey aboard Draken.

As Nolan puts it: “You feel that you’re there on the deck of the ship with Odysseus.”

A real ship. A real crew. A real voyage.

As the days shorten and the fjord turns cold, the dragon head comes down from the bow. For a few months, she rests — carved oak and gilded eyes tucked away from the wind and the salt.

The season is over, so the dragon sleeps. And somewhere in Kopervik, a ship waits quietly for spring, and the next horizon.

Thank you for an incredible season.
