Complete AP 2-D Art and Design Portfolio

So, it’s probably no secret my topic for my AP portfolio was teenage chronic illness. I have been chronically ill for the last 3 years and that’s the main reason I wanted to explore it as my sustained investigation. I chose to experiment through colors schemes, emotions, and mediums. My goal through this course wasn’t just to create art that meant something to me, but to other people, regardless if you also suffer from an illness. I wanted to capture the emotions that everyone can relate to, whether that’s anxiety about death, grief, or childhood. These were all topics I chose to explore throughout my artwork and through it I even learned more about myself. Definetly my favorite piece I got to create is the massive pen and ink of me screaming. I think I will forever be obsessed with that piece. I also was able to experiment by fully fingerpainting a piece just becuase I wanted to have a little fun. I hope seeing all this work in one place will remind you that no matter what, you will be ok, becuase you will. You are resilliant and you will survive, no matter what life throws your way <3

“Nothing New”

This artwork gave me carpal tunnel! The concept of this piece is based on the sheer frustration of going to so many doctor appointments that don’t help, trialing medication over and over again, and honestly just being sick of being sick as a chronically ill person. I chose the name “Nothing New” to show the feeling of going in circles in the medical field. For the background, I utilized what’s called a Zentangle. Zentangles are typically supposed to be calm and pleasant to look at, with each line almost being alive because one little change in one line can alter that whole section of the piece. I juxtaposed that with the stippling of the self-portrait. I chose to have my eyes shut, screaming to convey the piece’s meaning. Even the medium I chose is significant. I decided to use one of the few brands of pens that doesn’t cause strain to my arthritis out of necessity and meaning.

“Starbug”

Painting with bleach on clothes might actually be my new favorite thing. If you know me, you know my favorite bug is a ladybug, but I realized I didn’t actually own any clothes that featured them. So what does an artist do? Create it! I also really love space, hence the stars and kinda galaxy spiral on the back! This shirt features a 7-spotted ladybug native to Europe and Asia. They were introduced to North America in the 1950s for pest control and are now considered native to that region as well! This is my new favorite shirt, and I will be creating more in the future!!

“Flourecent Tentacles”

Stippling! Oh, how I love and hate you, haha. I have been meaning to experiment with colored stippling for a while now, and it was so much fun! This has genuinely opened up a whole art world for me, and I am excited to keep experimenting with it. I chose to draw an octopus because one of my close friends is obsessed with them, and I thought it would be a really good subject to play around with colors and texture on!! I was also in need of a Christmas gift for him haha, so it worked out. Hope you enjoy this piece as much as I loved working on it <3

“To Be Loved Is To Be Changed”

The quote “To be loved is to be changed” is genuinely my favorite quote and one I hold close to my heart. This assignment was to take something and change it into a piece of art, and I chose an Altoids container. Obviously, my brain went to my favorite phrase, and I decided to utilize it as the main theme of this piece. I loved playing around with fabric, paper, buttons, and pretty much anything I could find to create texture. I wanted to create a little world hidden in this container. I chose to paint a butterfly on the outside because they are the creature that humans most associate with change and growth.

“Fixed Human Nature”

Another piece left over from AP Art Portfolio! For this project, we had to utilize a page from a book to inspire our piece. While searching in a poetry book about math, of all things, I stumbled across the quote: “The idea of a fixed ‘human nature’ that has us by the throat,” and that’s what I based my piece around. I chose to draw a skull and ribs because no matter what, everyone dies and is overtaken by nature, not to be all morbid. Human nature is the desire to find meaning in this floating rock in space. As a chronically ill person, I am aware of my difference in quality of life, and this leads me to weigh choices more thoughtfully than my peers. I am painfully aware I will one day be bones, and young adults my age do not have that same appreciation for life. These ideas about mortality and human nature are what drove this piece
(I did this whole piece within like 2 days so limited progress photos I fear)

“No Abnormal Findings”
1. Tachycardia: Emergency Fuel Protocol
2. Migraine: Authorized Excavation
3. Liver Inflammation: Hostile Infrastructure Upgrades

This piece/mini-series was left over from my AP Art Portfolio! For this piece, I really wanted to experiment in a style I wasn’t comfortable with. I drew a lot of inspiration from the typical political cartoon style since I have always been interested in how art plays a role in history and the political atmosphere. I really love how political cartoons tell stories and convey ideas in a small picture, and that is exactly what I wanted to accomplish in these pieces. The subject of this piece originated from how, whenever I have a migraine, I say I have “little men in my head,” and the tool they’re using changes depending on the degree of the migraine. From there, I expanded the idea for other symptoms. Although this piece didn’t make my final submission, I would love to experiment with this style further in the future!
(Apparently I was allergic to progress photos during this project my apologies)

“Homework and Nausea”

My goal throughout my whole AP portfolio was to experiment with perspectives and interesting ways to present concepts. This piece is a testament to the nights throughout high school I would spend in my bathroom completing homework riddled with nausea, fatigue, and every other symptom imaginable. If this piece looks familiar to you, it is rendition/redraw of the piece featured on the last slide! I chose this piece to apply the tunnel book concept because in the original piece the perspective was already extremely well established i would work well with this style of piece. I started by sketching and simplifying my original design on paper. I transferred it to my digital software, created the line art for this piece, printed it out three times on watercolor paper, and then painted and assembled it! This was such a fun piece to create and figure out how to turn a 2-D piece into a 3-D!!

“Exposed and Examined”

Part of what I really wanted to experiment with my AP portfolio was unusual mediums, hence the mirror. There is genuinely no good way to photograph this piece so I apologize and I hope the idea is still gotten across! I really wanted to play around with the idea of an interactive piece of art. Each of the organs pictured is fully to scale for the average person, then they are placed in a way when you stand directly in front of the mirror, you can “see” your organs. I wanted to portray the feeling of uneasiness of doctors testing and ultrasounding your organs to the average person. The feeling like a body that’s only purpose is to be a science experiment. I had a blast creating this piece through the trial and error as well as my good favorite pen and ink

“Fields of Resilience”

Finger-painting! This piece is almost entirely painted using only my fingers! The only time I used a brush was for mixing and some of the super fine details of the face. In this artwork I wanted to explore childhood And joy again but instead of the subject being the focus I chose to alter the process and medium. This piece I wanted to touch on the fact that chronic illness is not the end of someone’s life and that even with chronic illness you can find so much joy in what I like to call “the little things in life” That even on my worse symptom days I can laugh and crack jokes. That’s why I chose finger painting to really capture the just sheer “child like” joy that I find in the “little things” This is definitely not my favorite work because painting is probably my least favorite medium (sorry to all the painters) but I really enjoyed creating this piece and that’s all that matters!

“Vitals, Then Homework”

Teenage chronic illness is something that’s nowhere near talked about enough. You are expected (and want to) be just like a normal teenager. You want to get into trouble, do extracurriculars, and keep your grades up, all well managing this extremely unpredictable illness. For this piece, I utilized school papers, transcripts, and essays for the background. I chose to juxtapose that with abnormal test results whether blood work or a physical medical test I had done. I wanted to showcase in this piece that chronic illness takes and takes but if you have enough determination you can slow it down. The image is a photo my mom took of me doing homework in the rheumatologist’s office because I had another doctor’s appointment that day and wouldn’t have time otherwise. Sometimes I question how I found the determination to maintain a 4.7 gpa while being disabled.

“Dose by Dose”

Oh my god, this piece actually took forever. Yes, those are pill capsules, and yes I filled every single one by hand (sometimes multiple times if they weren’t the correct color). As much as I love this piece it’s up there in “pieces I will never attempt again” due to the sheer tedious process and trial and error. I wanted to explore medication as a theme for this piece. Personally, I take about 15ish pills a day. At one point I was taking 27 pills every day. Medication becomes an everyday part of your life with chronic illness and I wanted to showcase that by making a portrait, of myself, taking a pill, where my body is made by pill capsules (say that ten times fast).
