🇮🇹 Giorno numero 10: Mistico!

🇬🇧 Day number 10: Mystical!
Nature is full of truly extraordinary phenomena, some of which seem almost mystical. Among these are the northern (or southern, depending on the hemisphere you’re in) lights. These luminous phenomena are visible beyond the Polar Circle and form when particles from solar winds hit the Earth’s upper atmosphere! 🌌
They definitely don’t happen in Mr. Skinner’s kitchen! 😂

🇮🇹 Giorno numero 9: Ariete!

🇬🇧 Day number 9: Ram!
The Rocky Mountain sheep, also called bighorn (Ovis canadensis), is a species that lives in the mountainous regions of Canada and the United States. Its habitat consists of alpine meadows, grassy mountain slopes, and areas near cliffs, although some subspecies can live in desert areas in the southwestern United States and Mexico. These sheep can weigh over 140 kg, and the males are characterized by large curved horns that can weigh up to 14 kg (hence the name bighorn)!

🇮🇹 Giorno numero 8: Schifo!

🇬🇧 Day number 8: Stinky!
The Rafflesia is a parasitic plant found in Southeast Asia, comprising 41 species. Its flower, one of the largest in the world, has five fleshy red petals and can exceed 1 meter in diameter and reach a weight of 10 kg. But if you think it also smells good, you’re way off. These flowers emit a smell that reminds you of rotting meat, which is meant to attract carrion flies so they can get pollinated! 🌺

🇮🇹 Giorno numero 7: Panico!

🇬🇧 Day number 7: Panic!
I’d say it’s appropriate when you’re being chased by a Megaraptor! 🦖
Megaraptora were a group of theropods (possibly related to tyrannosaurs) that lived during the Cretaceous, between 130 and 66 million years ago, in South America, Thailand, Japan, England and Australia. They were between 4 to 10 meters long or more, and unlike other large carnivorous dinosaurs, they had big, strong front limbs armed with huge curved claws, which were very useful for catching and injuring prey!

🇮🇹 Giorno numero 6: Orco!

🇬🇧 Day number 6: Ogre!
You’re probably wondering what a duck has to do with an ogre. Let me introduce you to the velvet scoter (Melanitta fusca), a large duck that lives in coastal waters. They breed in northern Europe but spend the winter further south in large flocks. These waterfowl dive to feed on crustaceans and mollusks. 🦆

🇮🇹 Giorno numero 5: Schiaffo!

🇬🇧 Day number 5: Smack!
In case anyone thinks that I got inspired by a particular movie for this scene (Night at the Museum), that’s all speculation! 😂
The colombian white-face capuchin (Cebus capucinus) is a primate of the Cebidae family, native to the forests from eastern Panama, western Colombia, to northwestern Ecuador. It can weigh from 1.5 up to 4 kg (males are generally heavier). It’s an arboreal and intelligent species that lives in groups, feeding on fruit, insects, and small vertebrates. Its conservation status is considered Vulnerable! 🐒

🇮🇹 Giorno numero 4: Cactus! 🌵

🇬🇧 Day number 4: Cactus! 🌵
The Saguaro (Carnegiea gigantea) is a large cactus that grows in the Sonoran Desert (southwest USA and northwest Mexico). These plants can reach a height of 15 m. When it rains, they can store a lot of water, weighing more than 2 tons. They provide a nesting place for woodpeckers (and for other animals that use their abandoned nests) and food through their fruits for various creatures. Like other cacti, the spines are just modified leaves, whose purpose is to prevent water loss through transpiration in such arid areas and to defend against herbivores!

🇮🇹 Giorno numero 3: Miniatura!

🇬🇧 Day number 3: Miniature!
Here I ended up right in a medieval miniature, and in a situation that’s not exactly calm! 🐉
The term miniature refers to the paintings used to decorate manuscripts and ancient texts. But despite appearances, the name doesn’t come from the size, but from a particular mineral used to make the red color (called minium)! 📜

🇮🇹 Giorno numero 2: Reliquia!

🇬🇧 Day number 2: Relic!
Here I chose a genuine relic of nature: a fossil! 🦴
Fossils are the result of a long process known as fossilization: if, at the death of the organism, it is quickly buried by sediments (at the bottom of a river, under volcanic ash, or elsewhere), it remains protected from detritivores, weather events, and bacteria. Over time, while the sediments turn into rock, the hard parts of the body (especially bones, teeth, and shells) can mineralize. Eventually, movements of the Earth’s crust can bring these remains to the surface where they can be found, hopefully before being destroyed by weather or other events. However, this is a very rare occurrence, as the vast majority of living beings decompose completely. by @drawnload

Vedremo come andrà a finire! ✍️
Partiamo con il numero 1: Mela. 🍎

🇬🇧 Ladies and gentlemen, this year I want to try my hand at Inktober, where you’ll be able to see me on my (imaginary) time and space travels, where I’ll share some little curiosities. Let’s see how it goes! ✍️
Let’s start with number 1: Apple. 🍎
Did you know that the apple tree (Malus domestica) belongs to the Rosaceae family, the same as pears and roses? 🌹
And that many species of insects (like the fruit fly Rhagoletis pomonella) when they lay their eggs under the skin or flesh of a fruit release a pheromone that prevents other females from laying their eggs in the same fruit? This way they avoid internal competition and make sure the eggs are spread evenly across different fruits. 🪰
