Headed to Spokane, Washington!

There’s something special about traveling with purpose.

I’m headed to Spokane to work with leaders at the APHSA ISM Conference, and I’m reminded that leadership isn’t about where you sit—it’s about how you show up.

For more than 25 years as a college basketball referee, I learned that you don’t need to be the center of attention to influence what happens around you. You need presence, courage, and responsibility.

That lesson goes far beyond the basketball court.

This weekend, we’re going “Beyond the Whistle”—developing leaders who communicate, make decisions, and lead with confidence, especially when the pressure is on.

Spokane, here comes The Leadership Referee™!

Lead From Where You Are™

New Orleans bound!

I’m headed to the Niche Leadership Summit, and I’m excited about the opportunity to share Beyond the Whistle.
For 25 years as a college basketball referee, I learned that leadership isn’t always about being the person with the highest title. Sometimes leadership is simply having the presence, courage, and responsibility to step up when the moment calls for you.

That’s the message I’m taking to New Orleans:
Leadership is not a title you hold. It’s a presence you carry.

Excited to be one of 10 speakers joining Dr. Pam Perry for Professional Speakers Day — a special session where accomplished speakers share the real lessons behind the journey from "expert with a message" to "sought-after speaker."

My top lesson? You don't need the title to lead the room.

I spent 25+ years officiating NCAA Division I basketball — no scoreboard control, no roster, no formal authority. Just the responsibility to lead every play, every game, from the sideline. That's where Positionless Leadership™ was born for me: the idea that real influence never waited for permission.

If you're building a speaking career, a classroom, a team, or a ministry — you're already leading from where you are. The stage is just the next room.

Join us live at 12 Noon today for 10 speakers, 50 insider strategies, one hour.

There comes a moment in life when you stop waiting for permission to lead… and start walking fully in the purpose God placed inside of you.

This picture reminds me that leadership is not about the title, the platform, or the position. It’s about presence. It’s about conviction. It’s about having the courage to Lead From Where You Are.

For years, I blew a whistle on basketball courts across the country. People responded because of the authority connected to the whistle. But life taught me a deeper lesson: when the whistle is gone, your character, communication, and consistency are what remain.

That’s the challenge for all of us.

Can people still feel your leadership when the title is removed?
Can they still trust your voice when you no longer hold the position?
Can they still see integrity, wisdom, and purpose in the way you show up?

I believe winning organizations, schools, ministries, and families develop leadership at every level.

So today, don’t wait for another title.
Don’t wait for the perfect opportunity.
Don’t wait for someone else to validate your greatness.

Lead right where you are.

Because influence was never meant to be worn like a badge…
it was meant to be lived.

I was in the room while Walter Bond was on stage—and one thing stood out beyond the message:

**Presence.**

As a referee, I learned early—before you blow the whistle, the game already knows who you are.

Leadership is the same.

Your title may get you in the room…
But your presence is what people feel.

It’s not about position.
It’s about alignment—knowing who you are and why you’re there.

So here’s the question:

When you walk into the room… what shows up first—your title, or your presence?
