Looking back at the 2025 PEBCI Convening💫

Our first convening brought together educators and leaders from across Washington State to @cedarbrooklodge to share what was taking shape in their schools, exchange ideas, and cultivate what public education can look like.

We were honored to welcome Drs. @berniceaking and @kelishagraves from @thekingcenter. Dr. @berniceaking, reflected on her father’s teachings, the role of education in her family’s story, and the ongoing work of creating beloved community.

Grounded in the legacy and vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the gathering centered the relationships, ideas, and possibilities at the heart of PEBCI’s work.

We were honored to have PEBCI recognized at this year’s Seattle University Inclusive Excellence Reception for its impact in the greater community!

From the vision that sparked this work to the educators and communities carrying it forward, this recognition belongs to a growing collective committed to (re)imagining what is possible for public education.

In the second slide, hear from members of the PEBCI team as they reflect on the heart behind this work and what it means to put that vision into practice.

Thank you to @su_diversityandinclusion for recognizing this work and to everyone who continues to be part of this journey!

A new chapter for PEBCI.

The Public Education in Beloved Community Initiative (PEBCI) is (re)imagining public education through beloved community.

Meet PEBCI’s Principal Investigator, @drdillard, and Director, @diajoywright, in this introduction to the work, vision, and possibilities guiding the initiative!

As we enter this next chapter, we will share more about the people, partnerships, research, and moments shaping PEBCI across Washington State.

Welcome to what’s next!

A celebration. Roasted salmon, green beans, and my new favorite: Ajo Blanco (sometimes known as white gazpacho). It’s like a mouthful of velvety goodness! And don’t forget the Vino Verde. Cheers! Monday has been AMAZING! #godsabundance #shecooks #dakastaughtme #celebratinglife by @drdillard

Restaurant De Kas. I would fly 10 hours again just to eat at this restaurant in Amsterdam. Farm to table. Vegetarian forward and absolutely amazing. Combinations of food that I, as an avid cook, have never thought to put together! Their motto is “picked in the morning, eaten in the afternoon” — and you could TASTE it! this was by far one of the most incredible dining experiences in the world! From the stunning gardens (with the most beautiful tomatoes, vegetables and greens y’all!), to the incredibly kind and knowledgeable staff, to the tasty AND aesthetic presentations by the Michelin star Chef, this was the best near four hour lunch I’ve ever eaten (and drank— that shiso sour was EVERYTHING!). If you are ever in Amsterdam, PLEASE do not miss this experience. Thank you, @restaurantdekas ! Even bought a cookbook in hopes to make a few of the dishes on my own until I can return to Amsterdam again! 💯🙌🏾✈️🤩💯#restaurantdekas #farmtotable #greatcocktails #amsterdam #lookatthislook by @drdillard

When your lime & guava margarita matches your lime & guava table cloth: That’s summer fashion at our house! And when the crab enchiladas and homemade guacamole hit this table, LOOK OUT!!! #summervibes #margaritaville #shescookintoday by @drdillard

This post from @yari.mercedes really hit me. I recall the labor of this work, the way it propelled me to Full Professor and how proud I was then to be an “author.” What I did not expect is the way that this book has traveled and moved people all over the country. On Spiritual Strivings taught me that our inner lives are worth exploring. That spirit is what animates us. And that love is worth striving for. Period. Thanks for the (re)minder, Sis. ❤️#onspiritualstrivings #thespiritofourwork #love #startwithyourself by @drdillard
