🚨9STRAP IN ACTION

I had a chance to take a lot more swings with the 9Strap and I really liked it! My hands definitely felt more connected and it also felt like I was getting them (and thus my bat) through the zone quicker.

If you’re thinking of checking out the 9Strap, head to www.9Strap.com & use my code “DrDrew” for 20% off!

I’m probably long overdue for this, especially since I’ve been doing this account for about a year now, so here goes…

Who am I? My name is Drew Athans, aka Dr. Drew Baseball, and I’m a husband, dad of 4 kids, baseball coach, and scientist. Am I really a doctor? Yes! I have a PhD in chemistry and that’s my “day job.” (But nobody calls me “Dr.” except as a nickname “Dr. Drew” so I chose that as my name on here).

I’m originally from New England but live in the Midwest now. I’m still a lifelong diehard Red Sox, Celtics, and Patriots fan! I played baseball and basketball growing up (my two favorite sports in that order) and have coached both for the last ~15 years and counting. I was a catcher when I played until I was 13/14. I took a break from baseball and ran varsity cross-country for three years in high school. When I got to college I wanted to play again but my school (UNH) axed it my freshman year to comply with Title IX. It was brought back my senior year and I played (now as an outfielder) in the inaugural 2000-2001 season. The program is going strong and I’m thrilled to see it as a proud alum!

I started this page to share my passion for baseball, to teach and help as many players and fellow coaches as possible. I’ve also become VERY interested in sports psychology and mental training (especially for young athletes) as my own kids have gone through their sports journeys from tee ball to college ball. My goal with this page is to spread positivity and positive coaching strategies along with mental and baseball training. My focus area is the 10U to 18U age range for baseball (and softball) but I think/hope what I’m trying to do can apply to 5 yr olds as well as college players in any sport.

Enough about me…welcome to any new followers and to those who are already following, I appreciate you!

🚨COACHING ISN’T A COMPETITION

My fellow coaches, let’s make sure that the motivations for why we do what we do are player-centric. It’s not about us and if that’s why you’re doing it, you’re not in it for the right reasons

🚨KNOW THE SITUATION

Like everything in life, there’s a time and a place for certain things. Trying to make the big play is great, but there are certain times you DON’T want to based on the game situation. This play from a game last night is a great example why.

What are some other times you need to know the situation and adjust your play based on it?

🚨BARREL ANGLE

A super important (and very subtle) aspect of your swing is your barrel angle. Too flat and you’re swinging down and around the ball. Too steep and you’re popping everything up. Both keep the barrel in the zone for so little time that your margin for error is basically zero.

Something in between, where you’re swinging at a slight upward angle ON PLANE with the ball and finishing through it is the way to go. None other than Ted Williams himself preached this, and he knew a thing or two about hitting.

What do you think? Which is best? What does yours look like?

🚨STOP DOING THIS

HOT TAKE:

Coaches, if you baby any of your players, STOP.
Players, if you get babied, tell your coach to STOP…you shouldn’t want to be babied.

When we make excuses and don’t hold ourselves or our players accountable, growth is stifled and resentment builds (especially among the other players who see it happening).

Instead, as coaches, be fair and firm and hold players accountable. As players, take ownership for your poor play or actions, learn from them, and get better.

What do you think? Have you seen this happen before? How did you handle it?

🚨STACKED

Make sure when you land after loading that you’re STACKED. Shoulders, waist, and knees should all be lined up on top of each other. That way you’re balanced and ready to push into the ground and turn behind the ball with as much of your force as you can.

Do you hit a lot of weak grounders and fly balls? Do you roll over a lot or hit everything off the end of the bat?

Here’s a simple fix for hitters who have those problems. Work on stopping your front leg from leaking and killing your timing and power. Keep your front leg straight and hit against it instead.

Simple fix, big improvement.

End of the season, end of the team, end of an era.

RIP to the Titans Regional - Athans team: July 2022 - July 2026

Yesterday, I coached my final game for my Titans team, and the final game in the existence of this team. As of now the team is no longer in existence, dissolved and all of my players dispersed to other teams within the organization for next year (17U).

It’s been a fantastic four years coaching this group. I’ve had the same core seven kids for all four years, a few others for three, a couple for two, and a couple just this year. Everyone who has ever played for me on this team (18 in total over four years) has been a pleasure to coach.

Over four years, we went 73-69-13 (and that’s with this season’s record dragging it down). We won a lot of games, won a few tournaments, finished second in a couple tourneys, and almost always played deep into the weekend every week. We had a winning record every season except this one (the stars just didn’t align for us this season) and we’ve had a lot of fun along the way.

Most importantly, everyone has grown immeasurably. My players grew physically as they went from 12 year old kids to grown 16/17 year old young men, and all of us have grown even more as players, coaches, and people.

It was a hell of a lot of work on my part, and also a hell of a lot of fun. It’s time for them to play for someone else and time for me to take a break, but I can’t wait to see what they continue to do as players and people next year and beyond. And I’ll get back to coaching once the time is right in a couple of years.

“Changes aren’t permanent, but change is.”
