@autumnbreon is visiting from LA for the third annual @nexussfbay and the start of @falloffreedom’s call for galleries, museums, artists, and creatives to take a stand with creative resistance nationwide.

While in town, Breon visited Dread Scott: The Body Politic at @ybca, where @dreadscottart’s work confronts American patriotism head-on and asks each of us to consider where we stand.

The show includes two new commissions: a durational performance, Defending the Flag, and a monumental canvas of layered body prints made with community members. His exhibition is on view through January 31, 2027 and is curated by René Morales.

Follow @falloffreedom to learn more about how you can take part, and stay connected with @moadsf for more from Nexus and the artists shaping this moment.

Still thinking about last week. ❤️

We opened two extraordinary exhibitions at YBCA: by Rael San Fratello and by Dread Scott.

It’s deeply satisfying to see creative endeavors move from months of conversations, planning, problem-solving, and care into rooms filled with people and artist friends encountering the work for the first time.

So much love & respect for the YBCA team who made it happen.

The galleries are looking 🔥. Come see these shows.

“Dread Scott: The Body Politic” opens today at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.

Come behind the scenes to see how Dread Scott created “Life/Death/America” for this exhibition, a work made up of dozens of layered body prints. Created with the participation of community members, the piece is an immense yet ethereal representation of civil society.

Dread Scott: To Propel History Forward

“I don’t think it’s the art by itself that changes the world — but there hasn’t been any social movement of progress that I’ve known of that hasn’t had art as a vital component of it.” Interview By Hugh Leeman by @dreadscottart

In the exhibition “Dread Scott: The Body Politic,” Scott presents a series of ghostly, evocative body prints.

To make the prints, Scott instructs participants to lie flat as oil is applied to their bodies, with paper then carefully draped and pressed over them to capture an impression of the body. Powdered pigment is applied to the paper, adhering to the oil residue, while excess pigment is removed. This technique results in an image simultaneously detailed and abstract.

Reflecting on his body print projects (which build on techniques employed by artist David Hammons), Dread Scott says: “Some of the prints are experiments to better learn the medium. The image I make is indexical—directly tied to (the) body. In some of the prints, I paint into the image, augmenting what is revealed by the impression of (the) figure. Others are more expressive and respond to a world on fire resting on mountains of oppression.”

Witness these prints along with other powerful works by Dread Scott, at the exhibition’s opening night on Fri. 9/25 from 6–9pm.
