Wow what a night 🙏 Dreamtime in Newark: Aljira and the Making of Global Contemporary Art is open to the public at the Newark Museum of Art all the way through June 2027 🫡

Please visit this exhibition and see for yourself the fruits of labor of all dedicated participating parties, from the Museum itself, to curators Alliyah Allen and Tricia Laughlin Bloom, curatorial assistant Monisha Bernard, curatorial, collection & installation teams at the NMOA, Victor Davson and Cicely Cottingham, yours truly at The Aljira Archive Project + archivist Josie Naron and historian Mark Krasovic, the loaning artists & collecting bodies, the NMOA staff who served us delicious cherry limeades at the opening reception, and each of our individual guiding lights for this kind of strange yet embodied and necessary culture work, my continual two who are Emma Wilcox and Evonne Davis. Not to mention countless other teachers and mentors, like Fausto Sevila and JC Lenochan who were in the room and others like Bob Richardson and Kennis Fairfax who weren’t.

This was work, but isn’t it great that we get to celebrate our work 🙏

For three nights, moving-image art will take to the streets from Mid-Market to Yerba Buena October 30 - November 1.

With the help of Bay Area curators the Inaugural Meet the Moment International Video Art Festival brings together more than 30 works that are confrontational and intimate, documentary and speculative, activist and poetic. They bear witness, challenge dominant narratives and ask whose histories and experiences are pushed from public view.

Beginning at TnT Art Lab, the festival unfolds as a walkable loop — traveling along Market Street through Yerba Buena Lane to YBCA, and down Mission Street to Root Division. Work by local and international artists will appear in storefront windows, arts organizations, local businesses, vacant spaces, and large-scale outdoor projections.

Come walk the loop.

When: October 30 - November 1, 4-9 p.m.
Opening Reception: October 30, 5p.m.
TnT Art Lab, 67 Turk Street
Where: TnT Art Lab, De Dos Tierras, Warfield Commons, Mi Cocina Denim, 966 Market St, Blick Art Supplies, YBCA, Sentro Filipino, 6M Community Arts, Root Division, YOTEL, with more to be announced.

612 events. Hundreds of communities. One weekend of creative resistance.

Across the country and beyond, artists and communities came together in theaters, galleries, streets, classrooms, bookstores, museums, and concert venues, making their voices heard through a collective act of creativity, solidarity, and resistance to fascist rule.

And it happened because you showed up.

Art matters. Courage is contagious.

Folks, it feels like Monetta @monettawhite brought the whole world together to kick off MOAD NEXUS: SF/Bay Area Black Art Week! 🎨✨
Thrilled to join fellow leaders, creators, and advocates as we launch a week dedicated to elevating Black art, expanding representation, and driving equity in our cultural institutions.
Looking forward to connecting throughout the week and diving into critical conversations, including our upcoming panel, Art eXodus: Creative Collecting, where we’ll share strategies for collectors to acquire artwork, advocate for artists of color, and foster lasting structural change in the art world.
Let’s celebrate the rich creativity, history, and future of Black art in the Bay Area and beyond! I’m so excited about my talk!

@autumnbreon is visiting from LA for the third annual @nexussfbay and the start of @falloffreedom’s call for galleries, museums, artists, and creatives to take a stand with creative resistance nationwide.

While in town, Breon visited Dread Scott: The Body Politic at @ybca, where @dreadscottart’s work confronts American patriotism head-on and asks each of us to consider where we stand.

The show includes two new commissions: a durational performance, Defending the Flag, and a monumental canvas of layered body prints made with community members. His exhibition is on view through January 31, 2027 and is curated by René Morales.

Follow @falloffreedom to learn more about how you can take part, and stay connected with @moadsf for more from Nexus and the artists shaping this moment.
