I’m grateful to have been featured on @nbcasianpacificamerica @rhandanbc to discuss Dreaming Collaborative’s work and why civic education matters, especially as communities across the country navigate the rapid growth of AI infrastructure.

Because a handful of technology companies are reshaping our communities at an unprecedented pace. Our civic institutions and the public’s capacity to participate in them, must evolve even faster so that communities have a meaningful voice in shaping the future, rather than simply inheriting decisions made for them.

For me, this work has never been just about ai/data centers. It’s about helping people understand how local government works, how major decisions are made, and how residents can meaningfully participate in shaping the future of their communities, from simply responding to envisioning, to dreaming, to civic action.

I'm incredibly thankful to everyone who has shared their expertise on the podcasts, bts, over coffee, asked hard questions, attended community meetings, wrote letters, and contributed to this growing movement for greater transparency and civic participation. I know it's not easy. This conversation belongs to all of us.

Meet @ellinayin a first-generation Cambodian American artist, futurist, and entrepreneur!

Ellina Yin is a first-generation Cambodian American artist, futurist, entrepreneur, and civic innovator working at the intersection of art, technology, and democracy. She is the Founder and CEO of Dreaming Collaborative, a 501(c)(3) civic nonprofit developing new models of participatory democracy and helping communities build the power and imagination to shape the decisions that govern their lives. Her work spans civic technology, journalism, oral history, and public policy, exploring how creative practice and technology can make democracy more accessible, participatory, and accountable.

Yin co-led the successful 2022 Measure I ballot initiative in San José and is a Pulitzer Center AI Accountability Program alumna examining the civic and social impacts of emerging technologies. She has been recognized as a Knight Emerging City Champion, Multicultural Arts Leader, and New Leaders Council fellow, and has served as a city commissioner. She has presented to members of Congress, federal agencies, and government and civic organizations, and her work has been featured by NBC Bay Area, KQED, SF Standard, San José Mercury News, San José Spotlight, and other media outlets.

My parents grew up in beautiful village and my parents instilled in me a reverence of community service, you looked after family, community, and land. While the village I grew up in is much much larger I bring that same practice to San José. - Eastside San José girlie forever.

During AAPI Heritage Month, we study our history, examine our present, and plan for our future.

Join us on Wednesday, May 20th for an important community dialogue on the Supreme Court’s recent ruling in Louisiana v. Callais, a landmark decision that eviscerated Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.

Our discussion will convene national Filipino and AAPI organizations and legal advocates to provide historical, legal and current information around voting rights, redistricting and representation.
