Happy 10th anniversary, Silicon Valley At Home (SV@Home)! It was a special day as we also celebrated ten years since the passage of the 2016 Measure A Affordable Housing Bond. 🏠 SV@Home’s Common Ground Housing Summit brought together housing advocates, community partners, and public leaders to celebrate this progress and look ahead. It was an honor to be the keynote speaker, participate in a fireside chat with Executive Director Regina Celestin Williams, and moderate the breakout session, “The Next Generation of Leadership,” which featured housing champions. 🙌🏼 In 2016, the County of Santa Clara set an ambitious goal to develop 4,800 affordable homes. Since then, the Board of Supervisors has approved funding for 64 rental developments representing 6,793 homes, including 2,683 supportive housing units with 1,869 supportive housing units operating today. I’m grateful to the Office of Supportive Housing (OSH), OSH Director KJ Kamiski, and Deputy County Executive Consuelo Hernandez for their leadership and dedication to turning that commitment into homes. Our housing progress reflects years of work by the OSH team, housing champions, neighborhood leaders, and community partners across the county. ✊🏼 Congratulations also to Regina Celestin Williams, who was recognized for her leadership and commitment to housing justice as she approaches five years as SV@Home’s Executive Director this November! I look forward to continuing to be a partner with our housing coalition in the fight for more affordable homes and opportunities for young leaders to help shape the future of housing in Santa Clara County. I’m grateful to have been featured on @nbcasianpacificamerica @rhandanbc to discuss Dreaming Collaborative’s work and why civic education matters, especially as communities across the country navigate the rapid growth of AI infrastructure. Because a handful of technology companies are reshaping our communities at an unprecedented pace. Our civic institutions and the public’s capacity to participate in them, must evolve even faster so that communities have a meaningful voice in shaping the future, rather than simply inheriting decisions made for them. For me, this work has never been just about ai/data centers. It’s about helping people understand how local government works, how major decisions are made, and how residents can meaningfully participate in shaping the future of their communities, from simply responding to envisioning, to dreaming, to civic action. I'm incredibly thankful to everyone who has shared their expertise on the podcasts, bts, over coffee, asked hard questions, attended community meetings, wrote letters, and contributed to this growing movement for greater transparency and civic participation. I know it's not easy. This conversation belongs to all of us.
