“The stakes of healing are high and the cost is significant. Releasing generational weight is a process, not a quick fix or a fast track to freedom. These wounds are not superficial. Some are so old they have scarred over without ever truly healing. Pulling old wounds into the light can intensify the pain before it eases.
The daughter’s healing journey is no different, except her work is compounded. She is not just bringing her own pain to the surface. She is carrying the dormant grief of her mother and the buried wounds of her grandmother, summoning generations of trauma into the open. This is not an easy plight. Calling forward what was silenced, to name what was endured, invites discomfort that can feel unbearable. In that discomfort, transformation begins.”

More than five years ago, I moved back home after nearly a decade away and found myself among four generations of women in my family. Through conversations and conflict, dormant emotions surfaced across those generations, and I wasn’t quite sure what to do with them. So, I wrote.

What emerged was a world of questions about womanhood, motherhood, and, specifically, matrilineal inheritance. I started writing a book, but I wanted to see whether anyone else understood what I was trying to say. So I gathered my ideas into an essay in three parts: Mother, Daughter, Holy Spirit.

This has been a labor of love and a veneration of the feminine. An honoring of my bloodline and all that is connected to it. A benediction for sisterhood, the light it gives, and the love it brings.

I almost didn’t share this essay. I wrote it over a year ago, and now I have so much more to say and a deeper understanding of what I meant at the time. Like motherhood, sometimes you have to take time to get to know the things that came through you.

I hope you’ll join me on this journey. I’d love to hear what it brings up for you.

a short essay: say yes to Life as you align with more of who You truly are. Trust the Way in which you are being led, guided. When you ask for something, follow it up with TRUST and know that it is done. It’s simply waiting for you to believe. You are supported by that which you can’t see, but you can feel. Know that you can trust the guidance of your Inner Knowing, your Holy Spirit as you integrate who you are now with who you are becoming. Trust where you are being called. The path laid out before you is illuminated by the The Light. Have courage, have faith. Give yourself grace during times of integration. Get accustomed to it and trust that you will learn as you go.

Take your time, there is no need to rush.

Read that again.

Deepen your understanding of lessons learned previously, they are still valuable. Just like black lives still matter. You have the ability to see lessons of the past with fresh eyes and softer heart, an illuminated perspective, if you will. Meditate on and deepen your understanding of what you know for sure. Think, in Love, of how far you’ve come.

Lessons are not just learned in the confinement of school walls, are you paying attention? Have you applied what you know? Answers are all around you when you take a moment to look up. Look to the birds, sway with the trees, listen to the stream, flow with the wind… you just might drift into the answer you’ve been waiting for. The veil has been lifted, know this, act as if it is true. Integrate into You. by @dreamsofjasmine

Got a new phone so I’ve spent the last few weeks deleting thousands of photos and something that has been so satisfying is seeing the old me,sending her love and then reflecting, with gratitude about how different I am now. I’m pretty sure I was about twelve different people in 2021😂. Instagram is a space of curation, therefore, you see how people are doing big things and making cool moves but what you will never be able to capture in a reel or a post is who they are on the inside. Inner transformation is something that can only truly be seen by those who actually know a person and can only be understood by the person themself. While old Jasmine isn’t here anymore, I’m so grateful for her bravery and passion for life that fueled the decision she made years ago to do things differently. And while on the outside looking in, it may seem like I’m the same, to me, just four years feels like lifetimes ago.

Honestly, I had quite the weekend and I’m not even the same person I was last Monday lol.

If I had known it would take me four years to get to where I am now, I probably wouldn’t have started the process but instead I trusted that I knew what was best for myself and that the Spirit in me would never let me down.

A couple (paraphrased) nuggets I received from other beautiful black women that really resonated with me recently.

“Your past and your future are staring you down, both trying to get your attention. You are familiar with how both feel to you energetically. But which one resonates with who you want to be? Your future or your past?” @mssweetdee

“The tastebuds of your desires expand as you receive. Stop calibrating to the people to your left and to your right and instead look up to the realms of Heaven and ask: ‘What do I need to receive?’ @deepbreathhealing

What wisdom is resonating with your soul during this season where the collective is calibrating and preparing for the new? Let me know in the comments so we can all help each other on our journeys.

2021. It has been quite the year. December always brings about a time of reflection and gratitude for me. A time to reflect on the many lessons that I’m learning, re-learning and applying in my life. Forever and always gratitude for making it this far with my health,my heart and my sanity. If you’ve been with me for a while, you know I’m going to share my perspectives on growth and the reoccurring themes in my life. But, to be honest, I spent a lot of this year processing 2020 and I just now feel as if the dust has settled and truthfully, this year was all over the place for me. While the foundation of my desires and beliefs was stable, everything else felt a little chaotic. This year was humbling because the second I felt sure about something I was challenged and sometimes discouraged. It also felt as though the negative noise and the echo chamber that is the World Wide Web was especially loud. Collectively there seemed to be judgment and a desire to control at a maximum. But, I’ve learned that control is an illusion and judging others actions and decisions speaks more to how we feel than anything. I’ve been chewing on the idea that there is no separation between us and the things I see in others are in me as well. That has to be the case, if we are all One, all matter, all atoms, all Spirit, all apart of one body. As I’ve continued to release religious dogma and staunch limitations, I’m less sure but more curious. More open to possibilities which seem to be endless. Infinite probabilities. But what I’m always sure of is love. Love is real, available to us and accessible within us. Everyday, I want to grow deeper in a purposeful expression of love, that is my deepest desire. How often do you reflect on the love in your life? Why not as often as possible? Sending you Love today, receive it if you so choose and allow it to express itself through you in every moment. You won’t regret it.💜💜💜💜💜 by @dreamsofjasmine

November was a month of getting back to the basics for me. Returning to presence, mindfulness and flow. Lots of journaling and at least more meditation than I engaged in last month. Lol. A reoccurring theme for me this month was rushing. November was telling me in many different ways to SLOW DOWN. True to my love of the art of feminine energy, I took a moment to think about how rushing makes me feel : anxious, flustered and even angry sometimes. The lesson for me was this; there is no need to rush because I can’t change what time, day or month it is anyway. Time can *feel like it’s going by slowly or quickly but at the end of the day it is an illusion, a system that we all adhere to and yet we each experience it differently in any given moment. Time is precious and it is valuable but anxiously speeding down 395 to get to my destination one minute faster is not being present lol. It’s just not. It’s worrying about the future, it’s being upset about how I dealt with things in the past but the only thing that matters is now.

Let me know what November taught you and tell me what your intentions for December are. Love you so much. by @dreamsofjasmine

The last month, for me, was a lot about sifting through the old and being more open to the new.

Sifting through the pieces of me that I want to hold onto, that still feel good, and recognizing that aspects of who I am look different in different seasons. Leaning into more of myself everyday. Acknowledging what I like about myself and being unafraid to express that. But, there are things that just don’t allow my full expression, things that I picked up when I was in survival mode that I don’t need anymore. Things that don’t energetically align anymore. Those things I’m identifying, giving gratitude for, and letting them go.

A more persistent journey for me has been boundaries around my time. With both myself and others. Internally, I’m chill AF most of the time and I tend to express myself in big bursts of energy, extroversion and focus. Time tends to get away from me, especially when I’m not intentional about what I’m going to do with it. The odds of things actually happening in my life significantly increase when I take a moment to write it down and visualize it happening. Other people tend to honor my time when I do.

Leaning into grace, for myself and others. Intentionally applying the lessons that I’m learning and giving myself space to make gradual and even small changes. Scheduling time to be creative and being present so that I can connect with Divine Inspiration.

What are you learning lately? What are some life classes you are repeating? What are some new things, big or small, you’d like to implement this Fall? Black woman with box braids in large fedora hat by @dreamsofjasmine

I feel like we have all changed so much in 2020. One aspect of my own evolution this year involved a lesson in the importance of creation. I NEED to create. There is a birth, transformation, and healing process that comes from creating. In 2020, even before the pandemic, my Inner Creator was calling to me, loudly. I craved it. There is so much inside of us. The cosmos are within us, the Living God is within us. And within us we hold light, dark, contrast, desire and beauty. We were not created to hold these things in. Just as I am an expression of God, I too must express what I hold within me. When I leaned into my ability to create, I removed limits from my life in a new way. There is so much to learn from creativity. You learn patience and how to release perfectionism, you learn new skills and even how to give your art some space so you can receive fresh inspiration. Creation is simply a beautiful process that we were all meant to engage in. How can you create more in 2021 and beyond? by @dreamsofjasmine

For me, 2020, was a year of deep and rapid inner transformation. At one point I felt like I was having major revelations every day, deep healing was happening for me in a night that I'd been waiting on for years. Not only am I not the person I was in January 2020, I'm not even the person I was in October of 2020! Many spiritual teachers and prophets said 2020 would be the year of "2020 vision", where we would find great clarity about many things. To me, it felt like when you go to the eye doctor and look through the phoropter and it seems really clear but then your doctor makes a few small adjustments and says; 'How about now?' and all of a sudden it's a level of clarity that you didn't even realize was possible. That is 2020 in a nutshell for me. Can you relate?

While I did get clarity on many things and adjusted my paradigm around just about everything, the biggest lesson for me in 2020 was the importance of listening to the inner guidance that I call the Holy Spirit. You may call it intuition or gut feelings. What I realized in a new way was, everything I ever needed was within me all along, it wasn't at church or in a romantic relationship or another digital course. I was born with everything I need for life, love and healing. The thing about 2020 is my own, personal Inner Guidance spoke to me and pushed me to prepare for 2020 even before it happened and I didn't even realize what I was preparing for. I'm so glad that I leaned into my inner promptings because I don't know if I would have made it had I not previously laid a foundation of cultivating stillness, self-love, health, and healing because I dove into DEEP work within those things almost every day this year. As we wind down, this year, I encourage you to stop what you are doing, take a deep breath and ask yourself what it is that you learned this year. Reflect on what lessons you want to passionately apply and visualize where you want to go 2021 and beyond. by @dreamsofjasmine

Making the decision to travel in 2020 was difficult. Never in my life have I been so aware and felt somewhat guilty about my own privileges. It’s been difficult to navigate continuing to live my life fully, acknowledging that there are some advantages to this strange time that we will probably never experience again in our generation while also maintaining safety, compassion and consideration for myself and others. I’ve had to catch myself judging other people for how they choose to move and cope and live during this time. At the end of the day, in 2020 and beyond, we are all just doing what we believe is best for ourselves, our families and our sanity. And we aren’t going to do that in the same way. I wish the country I live in would have done a lot of things differently both historically and in the last seven months. We’ve all lost so much, we have all grieved in some way this year, been enraged about something, buried our feelings in something unhealthy but we made it to today. There are many who didn’t. Regardless of where you are, physically, mentally, spiritually, I just encourage you to be present and fully engage with your life, your pain, your triumphs, your family, your cat. Be present. Create moments that are beautiful to you that you never put on Instagram. And remember that life goes on. by @dreamsofjasmine
