Things your GP wishes you knew about online ‘health’ information (or more accurately, MISinformation) 😬🏥

1. It’s often geared towards selling you stuff - from egg freezing and testosterone to wellness products and supplements, much of the information we see online is a precursor to selling something you probably don’t want or need

2. A lot of it is unverified, with no evidence to say whether the claims are actually true. If you’re genuinely looking for health information, use the proper channels - the NHS website, patient forums and charities, and online spaces where health professionals give verified information

3. Misinformation often finds its way into the consulting room. As a GP, I help many of my patients to naivgate the contradictory information they have seen online, replacing it with safe, medically approved care

4. It perpetuates medical misogyny! Many of the health myths, misinformation and scare-mongering I see online are commerically-driven, particularly around the menopause,
HRT and women’s health

🩵 Every winter, the NHS faces a surge in demand, and emergency services like A&E come under pressure.

🕰️ However, there are often quicker, easier ways to get the right care when you need it – while keeping emergency services free for those who need them.

😌 That’s why I’m pleased to support a new @NHS campaign, highlighting services like the NHS App, community pharmacies, NHS 111, and GP online forms.

📺 To learn more, watch the striking new film ‘24 Hours Not In A&E’ showing how services like these can help you get the care you need while you’re on the go.

A few tips from me:

💊 Your local high street pharmacist can offer some prescription medicines for seven common conditions like UTIs and sinusitis, if needed, without a GP appointment.

📱 The NHS App allows you to order repeat prescriptions, manage appointments and check your health records at the tap of a screen.

💻 Using your GP practice’s online form to get in touch, is an efficient alternative to phoning your local practice and helps you avoid the 8am rush.

☎️ When your GP isn’t available, NHS 111 can give you trusted medical help for urgent health needs 24/7.

❄️ Knowing where to go for the right care can make all the difference this winter - your NHS is closer than you think by @drelliecannon

Can I say something about weight loss injections that I think really needs to be said?

Please. See a doctor before you start.

And ideally, stay under medical supervision throughout.

I understand why people go online.

It’s quicker, it’s discreet, and getting anything through a doctor takes time.

But the explosion of online shops selling GLP-1 medications like Mounjaro and Wegovy with minimal medical oversight genuinely worries me. 🔴

A doctor will check these medications are **right for you** in the first place.

They’ll look at your other medications, your medical history, your blood pressure, your bloods.

They’ll start you on the right dose and titrate it properly — because rushing doses is one of the biggest drivers of the side effects that make people give up.

So many people get in touch with their GP after being sold these and getting horrible side effects that the provider doesn’t care about.

Nausea, constipation, diarrhoea— these are so much more manageable with the right guidance.

So many people abandon these medications unnecessarily because nobody told them what to expect or how to handle it.

Get proper care. Not just a parcel through the door. 💙

It’s OK to save my life. 💚

This is the CPR Bra, and yes, it’s a bit of a conversation starter. But there’s a serious reason behind it.

There’s a gender gap in CPR, and it’s costing women’s lives. New research from @stjohn_ambulance found:

💔 23% of people say they’re less likely to give CPR to a woman in public than a man
💔 31% of men worry about being accused of inappropriate touching
📱 1 in 5 men would hesitate for fear of being filmed and posted online

But here’s the part that gives me hope: 69% of men say they’d feel more confident performing CPR on a woman if they’d had training.

As a GP, I can tell you that in a cardiac arrest, every second counts. Acting fast is always the right thing to do. The CPR Bra, created with @boobydoobras, has that message printed on it, along with the key first aid steps to follow in an emergency.

It goes on sale today, the day before Restart a Heart Day (16 October), and 50% of proceeds support St John Ambulance’s work to put first aid into more people’s hands.

Let’s bust the taboo and save more lives. Please share this with someone, and consider learning CPR if you haven’t already.

Today’s column is one I feel really strongly about. Please read it. Please share it. It could save a life.

Heart disease in women.

For too long — in medicine, in research, in public consciousness — heart disease has been thought of as a man’s problem. The middle-aged man clutching his chest. The classic heart attack. And that framing has been quietly, devastatingly wrong.

Heart disease is the biggest killer of women in the UK.

Not breast cancer. Not cervical cancer. Heart disease. And yet women are still being under-diagnosed, under-treated, and far too often — not believed. 🔴

I have sat with female patients whose heart attacks were missed. Who were sent home from A&E. Who were told it was anxiety. This is not rare. This is happening.

**Know your blood pressure. Know your cholesterol. Know your family history.**

Don’t wait for symptoms. And if something feels wrong — push

You know your body. 💙

The gender gap in cardiac care is real and it costs lives.

Today’s column is about changing that, one reader at a time.

Talking about INCONTINENCE 👇

Thank you @bbcwomanshour for having @ashleylouisejames and myself on this week to talk about incontinence - Ashley spoke incredibly openly about her experience with both faecal and urinary incontinence after the traumatic birth of her son, while I delved into why incontinence can happen, why it’s NOT just associated with vaginal births, and the importance of improving access to pelvic floor physiotherapy for more women.

Listen to the full conversation on @bbcsounds 🎙️

😴 Today’s column is on sleep

In over two decades as a GP, I have written books about alcoholism, parenting, workplace ill health, and menopause.

Four very different books on four very different topics. And do you know what they all have in common?

Every single one has a chapter on sleep.

Sleep isn’t a lifestyle nice-to-have. It underpins almost every aspect of our physical and mental health and when it goes wrong, everything feels harder.

And yet as a profession, We are not great at fixing it.

sleeping tablets are not the answer. Short term, in very specific situations — perhaps.

But long term they are problematic, habit-forming, and they don’t give you real restorative sleep anyway.

We have been over-relying on them for decades.

The things that actually work :CBT for insomnia, sleep therapy, evidence-based apps are brilliant. The evidence is genuinely exciting.

But try getting a referral on the NHS right now. Try finding something affordable and accessible when you’re already exhausted and struggling. It’s not good enough. 🔴

So pleased to see the brilliant @ashleylouisejames talking about bladders and urinary incontinence on @thismorning 🙌

It’s an issue that I see so often in clinic, and yet we don’t talk about it due to the taboo surrounding it. It’s so great to see a woman speaking so openly about it!

If you’re experiencing any issues, please speak to your doctor. Pelvix floor physiotherapy should be available for everyone on the NHS and I have seen it work very well for patients.
