Did you know…? 🪡🧵🎭🛳️🌊 Did you know that I contract as a stitcher and tailor in the theater and entertainment industry? It’s not a gig most people think about or existed, and neither did I when I started! Whether I’m doing alterations on set on a tiny counter in a motorhome or on a ship balcony hand sewing hems and buttons, I’m making sure our talent and performers look their best. Working in these fast-paced and collaborative environments for over a decade have helped me identify the easiest ways to quickly and efficiently do alterations. You don’t need the fanciest equipment, just the skills! I love sharing what I do with others and helping them start their own sewing journey. Act 2 costuming BTS with me for @mssirintip’s world premiere of “MYCELIUM.” I’ve always been inspired by fungi and all things mycological so when Tip shared her fascination with this I knew we could do some interesting things together. I’m so excited I could work on this project and I love sharing my process with y’all! More info from her site: “Introducing ‘MYCELIUM’: Sirintip’s captivating interdisciplinary musical suite, born from a five-year artistic and research odyssey, intertwines the wonders of fungi and plankton with the power of music and storytelling. Mycelium, the intricate underground network of fungal organisms, inspires a journey of interconnectedness and hope, mirroring the unseen bonds between humanity and nature. Through collaborations with trumpeter/composer Danny Jonokuchi(Lady Gaga), visual designer Nitcha Tothong (Lumen Prize Winner), and dancer Marie Lloyd (Bill T. Jones), MYCELIUM merges science and artistry, incorporating data sonification, lyrical storytelling, and captivating visuals. I love draping so much! Here’s a little throwback to this project: i started with a more structured and fitter shape but slashed and spread until I got to this volume. The overall silhouette of the dress is classic but the sheer floaty sleeves make it look and feel truly unique. I hope I can work on something this gorgeous again soon! She needed the fit adjusted and wanted to attempt her own alterations, but knew it was a professional job. I offered to do the alt plus spend time showing her how I do the hem in a private lesson. I let her do some of it and it was really fun getting to know her! And of course meet some cute pups 🐶 Don’t forget my next sewing workshops are next week! I love how this shot from @kat.culture turned out! Kat builds unique and creative sets for her photography and I wanted to shoot one of my latest upcycling projects at her Berries n Cream photo booth. She has such a great eye for color and I knew it would be a fun place to shoot my “new” dress and have a cute time with Corgie and my friends. ICYMI I changed up this vintage skirt to a dress! It didn’t fit me anymore as a skirt so I thought it would be fun to make into a 60s-inspired dress. She really wanted emerald as the main color, so I hunted for the most opulent silks and trims. I really couldn’t find any buttons that matched the waistcoat well so I decided to custom make covered buttons in matching fabric. I’m really happy about the end result and they look so stunning. Upcycling: How do you like to do it? When I found this nightgown at @goodwillnfl I grabbed it because of the velvety and soft forest green that would be perfect for fall. Florida will never be quite cool enough for this cozy nightgown so I made this easy crop top with detachable sleeves and pencil skirt! I already owned a few pieces like these although I could definitely see a possibility for a maxi skirt, an oversized crop jacket, and more. For me, I love upcycling into separates because I add more options for mixing and matching into my wardrobe. We made this and more magic at my last Upcycling workshop at @sprucejax and I’ve helped more people get creative in private lessons! It’s so exciting to see people learning a new skill and using it. I hope that anyone who’s ever taken a workshop with me has continued on to feel empowered to make their own garments, alterations, and other sewing projects. Seeing people get excited to learn a new skill is so rewarding, because I know that feeling too! I grew up with my grandma sewing constantly and sewing garments for me. I finally learned through my partner’s mom and she let me use her sewing machine. With enough practice I knew how to run a stitch, and in college I finally learned all the essentials to make a functioning garment. Do you have a sewing machine but need to learn how to use it? Don’t forget Upcycling Workshop is this month September 9 and September 30 at @sprucejax. Definitely for those who already sew but want to learn more about clothing construction and sew a quick coordinating set 🪡🧵 BYOM as always and your first drink is on me!
