We photographed a brand’s dinner at The Chelsea, then finished our rolls on the sidewalk across the street. For my non–New Yorkers, there’s this perpetual hum around the hotel, a static frequency that spills onto 23rd Street. Your senses tune in without effort, aware but unburdened by the rush of movement. It’s kooky and creative, stories bleed from the walls, pool in the grooves of the concrete, continue to live under the streetlights and neon signs. It feels like life unfolding and imploding all at once. Only in New York do buildings breathe like this; relics of wild decades, still whispering to anyone who pauses long enough to listen. Ultimately it’s what makes New York so electric: the past never really leaves, it the flickers in the lights, waiting for the next person with a dream. taken in Hotel Chelsea by @drewsdreaming

I present to you my accidental ritual: End-of-the-Roll Self-Portraits. To qualify, they have to be the leftover frames from a roll shot for work, due to be developed the next morning. Wasting film feels like photographers faux pas , like an Irishman leaving a beer unfinished. And maybe it’s just faith in what the frame could* have been that I’m not willing to sacrifice. Somewhere along the way, those scraps became a practice: I check the count, set up at home in the evening, pick a corner of my apartment, and see what surfaces.
