Drexel University's MFA in Creative Writing program welcomed Saint Rita's Amazing Traveling Bookstore & Textual Apothecary to campus this week!

Owned and operated by Rita Collins, @stritasbooks has earned national attention for its unique mission of bringing books directly to readers through a mobile bookstore housed in a customized van. During its visit to Drexel, students, faculty, staff and members of the public had the opportunity to browse and purchase books directly from the traveling bookstore.

The visit was part of @drexelmfa's First-Year Residency, an immersive educational experience that combines literary craft with hands-on professional development. Drexel's low-residency MFA is distinguished by its emphasis on experiential learning and direct engagement with the publishing industry, connecting students with authors, agents, editors, publishers and other literary professionals.

Can berries help prevent some early symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease?

During his summer research in the STAR Scholars program, Navneeth Nalajala, biological sciences ’30, found some early evidence that some solvents extracted from goji berries can kill 'cutibacterium acnes,' which cause early symptoms of the disease. It’s a relatively new area of research, and one that he hopes to continue working in throughout his time at Drexel.

Nalajala is a BS/MD student, meaning that he will complete his four years of undergrad at the College of Arts and Sciences and then go on to Drexel’s College of Medicine for another four years. He’s already been involved in research and jumped at the opportunity to do STAR.

“I think the most interesting thing that I loved was talking with my peers, because we’re all in the same boat, all trying to find something new,” Nalajala said. “A lot of times when my project wasn’t working or I had questions, I would turn to my peers in the lab, and they were able to help because a lot of things cross over.”

For five weeks during the summer, Drexel’s School of Education hosts a transitional Pre-K to Kindergarten program at the Samuel Powel School in Philadelphia to help preschoolers transition into the atmosphere of a kindergarten classroom. Drexel’s teacher education students use this summer program opportunity to develop as teachers and craft their own lessons and activities.

This year, 37 soon-to-be-kindergarteners got to spend time in real classroom settings getting to know their future classmates, getting familiar with routines, and doing both social-emotional learning and literacy/math review. Because these things are so different from what they may be used to, the change can be scary! Understanding the routines of a typical kindergarten day will help set these young learners up for success. by @drexel_coas

"I had no idea I was going to be in the U.S. Foreign Service, or that I would be a diplomat. It wasn’t even on my radar, but it happened because there were so many people at Drexel that saw something in me before I saw something in myself," recalls Jade Umstead, criminology and justice studies ’24.

Umstead leveraged her @drexeluniv experience in crime statistics, predictive analytics and foreign language by going on to earn a master’s in international relations at the John Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. She was recently inducted as a U.S. Foreign Service Officer and will serve in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, for her first assignment.

Read more about her journey in the interview on our website!
