For five weeks during the summer, Drexel’s School of Education hosts a transitional Pre-K to Kindergarten program at the Samuel Powel School in Philadelphia to help preschoolers transition into the atmosphere of a kindergarten classroom. Drexel’s teacher education students use this summer program opportunity to develop as teachers and craft their own lessons and activities.

This year, 37 soon-to-be-kindergarteners got to spend time in real classroom settings getting to know their future classmates, getting familiar with routines, and doing both social-emotional learning and literacy/math review. Because these things are so different from what they may be used to, the change can be scary! Understanding the routines of a typical kindergarten day will help set these young learners up for success.

🚨Sneaker culture is not just about what is on your feet; it’s a whole material science masterclass. From the vulcanized rubber and EVA foam to the adhesives and colorfast dyes, the sneakers we rock everyday are artifacts of chemistry and chemical engineering. The ILLEST Lab at @drexelsoe is proud to announce a new National Science Foundation-funded project taking this exact exploration straight to middle school youths across Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore. Led by Christopher Wright and H. Bernard Hall at Drexel, in collaboration with Jakyra Simpson, aka The Sneaker Chemist and founder of STEAM Sneakerheadz, the program runs three years in three phases with the goal of inspiring and empowering future scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs through the #ChemistryOfFresh🤓 @drexel_coas @nike @dreamer @adidas @newbalance @asics @reebok @on

How can writing and storytelling empower us to build community? This question will guide our Fall WRIT 290 course, as we focus on oral history and grassroots community storytelling in Chinatown and West Philadelphia. Drexel students can register for the 3 credit course through Term Master, and community members can express interest through the link in our bio! This 10 week class starts on September 23rd.
